Some people didn't attend yesterday's Hands Off rally in Washington DC because getting there would have involved too much walking, and other people attended the protest but are now suffering worsened pain or disability as a result. Although the rally was fairly close to a Metro station, "fairly close" isn't close enough for people with certain health conditions.

A thought for future protests: It would be amazingly helpful if bicyclists operated pedicab service between public transit stations and protest sites. This could be done for free as a public service or in exchange for a modest fee. A single pedicab operator could be responsible for an additional 20 or more protesters attending a rally.

Of course, for pedicabs to increase the number of protesters, it would be essential for the availability of pedicabs to be advertised well in advance of a protest. So, protest organizers must be actively involved in organizing and advertising pedicab service.

I don't know how feasible pedicab service for protests would be in places that seldom see protests, but in a city like Washington DC that sees protests on a near-daily basis, it seems like it should be possible for someone to maintain a fleet of pedicabs then rent them out to the organizers of various protests.

The pedicab operators would presumably be bicyclists of the type who brag about how far they ride each day. I see some of those bicyclists on Mastodon. To them I say, I admire you already, but I would admire you even more if you volunteered to use your amazing muscles to help people with severe arthritis and other disabling conditions get to and from protests. :-)

Last night, I shared some of my favorite protest signs from the Hands Off rally in Washington DC:

Upon further reflection, I want to mention a sign that was noteworthy not for its content, but for who was holding it. It said something like "You voted for a rapist... twice!" and it was held by two men who appeared to be Mennonites. There were at least 20 other people in the crowd who also were wearing Mennonite clothing.

This is noteworthy, because Mennonites tend to be conservative. People who lean far to the left won't often find themselves protesting next to Mennonites. However, Trump is such a nightmare that Mennonites and other conservatives joined with leftists in protesting against him.

If we want to see Trump's madness reined in, we must continue to make our protests welcoming spaces for people from across the political spectrum so that more people like yesterday's Mennonites will join us. We cannot afford to involve only the left. We will be stronger together.

DMV.CommunityLkdc (@Lkdc@dmv.community)Canadians and Greenlanders might like to know that multiple protesters at the Hands Off rally in Washington DC on April 5, 2025 carried signs with slogans like "Greenland is not for sale" and "Hands off Canada". Other signs that I liked included: "God sent Trump because he ran out of locusts." "I'm a better Christian than any Trump supporter, and I'm an atheist." "Back to Democracy" [written in the same font as the "Back to the Future" movie title] "Trump and Musk need therapy, not power." Drawing of a person holding a brain, with a speech bubble saying "Hey, you dropped this." A 3-D plastic model of a spine, attached to a sign reading "Congress, where is yours?" Turnout was excellent, despite there being simultaneous protests for other causes (including Gaza) in other parts of the city. #HandsOff #protest #WashingtonDC

I attended the #WashingtonDC #HandsOff rally yesterday. Spirits of the attendees was high, but everyone was very worried about the death of democracy and the rise of fascism in America. Those who were not concerned are clearly not paying attention; they need to be educated. Start here…
