It's also, of course, a political move that undercuts the kind of Catholic politics that wants to run into the arms of hard-right dictators, who love to use the LGBTQ community and women as scapegoats in order to consolidate power. This move will put Pope Francis at odds with the many US Catholics who fawn over Donald Trump and welcome his declaration that he will rule the nation as an iron-fisted dictator attacking their "enemies" if he's elected.
As if the sacraments are badges of moral purity and rewards for good behavior and not medicine for sinners — that is, for all of us, since every single one of us is a sinner….
I'm sketching background here for this move on the part of Pope Francis to have the Catholic church show a more welcoming face to LGBTQ human beings.
People have lost jobs right and left in Catholic institutions because they are LGBTQ and have refused to hide that fact and have married same-sex spouses. It's as if there is no other sin in the world for Catholic communities to focus on.
This has elicited a wave of moral repressiveness, of ugly puritanism, in Catholic communities globally in which some people in some places are now trying to block single mothers from receiving communion.
In the Catholic context in recent decades, many Catholic communities, especially in the US, have worked overtime to let LGBTQ people know they are not welcome. In some parishes, LGBTQ people wearing rainbow solidarity symbols have been blocked by fellow parishioners when they try to walk down the aisle and receive communion.
They've been all about pretending that we are sinners in some exclusive, egregious way that places us in a special category of worst sinners of all.
They've been all about turning a vulnerable minority group into a scapegoat group on which the sins of the entire community are loaded, so that religious folks can pretend they are not sinners because the queers are the real sinners.
The statement affirming blessing same-sex marriages says that people are not to be subjected to harsh moral analysis as a precondition to being welcomed and loved.
As any LGBTQ person with Christian ties can tell you, that's exactly what the churches have been all about in their dealings with LGBTQ people for a long time now: They've been all about pointing to us and holding us up as the very embodiment of sin.
As Francis DeBernardo notes, the move of the Catholic church to sanction blessing same-sex marriages — but not performing same-sex marriages — is rooted in the view of Pope Francis that the fundamental mission of the church is to welcome all. Not to pass moral judgment. Not to exclude sinners on moral grounds, since, if it takes that tack, who will NOT be excluded?

I understand, of course that times change. We work harder to make the #classroom a #welcoming and #accommodating place for all students. We no longer have nuts in classroom celebrations. Vegan and gluten-free treats are available for children who need them.
And as a #TrueAlly to the Christian population of our school, of course I’m aware that not everyone celebrates Tu B'Shvat. Some people follow strict religions that require them to skip these kinds of #holidays.

If you want more marginalized folks to migrate here, please be more willing to share mutual aid asks and links to their shops or newsletters, as their finances often depend on it. Twitter gave them a chance to promote it, and for disabled folks in particular, we often rely on mutual aid support.
State governments are often horrifically draconian and oppressive for us, where the services that are offered to us are lacking and often useless. Disabled folks do not get enough disability benefits for survival. If you want to make it more welcoming for us, then be willing to aid us in mutual aid work.
But instead of aid, I've seen folks here be actively hostile to sharing or posting ANY requests for mutual aid or links to shops. Some report it thus causing more harm. This "no promotion" attitude is a really privileged and harmful take.
More folks would migrate IF they can safely rebuild what they're losing from Twitter. Demanding purity tests and not accounting for the complex nuances of those still on Twitter isn't helping. We need to build a more nuanced and accepting environment for those that rely on mutual aid for survival.
Community building isn't only talking and sharing stories. It's also building resources and spaces for folks to find and get what they need to thrive. This includes monetary support as well as building up sharing libraries. Let's build that here too, ok?
