Paleogeneticist Dr Nic Rawlence, also from Otago University, explained how ancient dire wolf DNA - extracted from fossilised remains - is too degraded and damaged to biologically copy or clone.

"Ancient DNA is like if you put fresh DNA in a 500 degree oven overnight. "It comes out fragmented - like shards and dust.

"You can reconstruct [it], but it's not good enough to do anything else with."

A white wolf walks through the snow with a stick in its mouth. This is one of the puppies born in a scientific project to bring back the dire wolf from extinction. But independent experts point out that these puppies are gray wolves with dire wolf DNA edited into their genetic blueprint.

A genetically modified wolf juvenile, one of three successfully bred by reconstructing a genome from the ancient DNA of fossils from dire wolves that had been extinct for over 12,500 years by Colossal Biosciences, billed as "the world’s only de-extinction company", is seen at age five months after his October 1, 2024 birth, at a secure site in the northern United States. via Colossal Biosciences

Game of #clones: Colossal’s new #wolves are cute, but are they dire?
#ColossaBiosciences claims it has revived an #extinct species, but scientists outside the company are skeptical.
It’s making a bold new claim—that it has actually “de-extincted” an animal called the #direwolf. Inside a preserve roam three striking snow-white wolves—which a startup called Colossal Biosciences says are members of a species that went extinct 13,000 years ago, now reborn via #biotechnology.

MIT Technology Review · Game of clones: Colossal’s new wolves are cute, but are they dire?By Antonio Regalado

Scientists from a Dallas company say they have brought back a kind of wolf that went extinct over 10,000 years ago. Three “dire wolf” cubs were genetically engineered to be brought back to life in an undisclosed secure location in the US, said the company. However, other scientists are skeptical about whether the cubs can really be classed as dire wolves.

Pepper and I are enjoying the controversy over whether Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi are dire wolves or not, because it's resulting in a lot of news articles with pictures of nice dogs.

It's also raising awareness about
• Roman mythology
• is-a versus has-a relationships
• and grey wolves generally, which we like

newscientist.com/article/24754

One thing's for sure. Pepper is not a Dingo.

What the heck is a dhole? Today-I-Learned…

Q. So, a dire wolf is an extinct species of wolf?

A. Grey wolves and dire wolves were thought to be very closely related based on their physical similarities, but a 2021 study of ancient DNA revealed that they last shared a common ancestor around 6 million years ago. Jackals, African wild dogs and dholes are all more closely related to grey wolves (Canis lupus) than dire wolves are, despite their similar appearances.

New Scientist · No, the dire wolf has not been brought back from extinctionBy Michael Le Page

'The pups certainly look like many people's vision of a dire wolf and the story has gathered global attention. So why is this scientific distinction important?

'"Because extinction is still forever," Dr Rawlence told BBC News. "If we don't have extinction, how are we going to learn from our mistakes?'

Why not stop killing existing wolves?

That said, these little balls of fur sure are cute.

Just stay out of the tar pits this time!

"Much of the dire wolves’ behavior reminded me of dogs’. Romulus and Remus rested on their haunches in the sun. They chased falling leaves; they chewed sticks. One peed, and the other hurried over to roll in it. Other aspects seemed wolflike—when Romulus got nervous, he did a sideways slide while facing us. (James explained to me that this maneuver is a way to both check out a threat and look as large as possible.) And, when the wolves ran, they loped as if their lower legs had an extra joint. They didn’t howl, and their footfalls were silent. Was this distinctive dire-wolf behavior? How could anyone say?"

The New Yorker · The Dire Wolf Is BackBy D. T. Max

~8M humans in Washington state, 230 grey wolves.

We continue to debate "are there too many wolves?"

#ScienceDenial kicks in, of course.

"You have to remember this is the minimum and there are really good odds there are more wolves out there than they are counting. At the end of the day, we are way beyond what their quote-unquote management level was and they should be down-listed."

There are much better odds that this rancher is ignorant of how to count #wolves.
