Established in 1929 by Waldo E. Sexton and Arthur G. McKee, the garden was designed by landscape architect William Lyman Phillips, who integrated streams, ponds, and trails into the native tropical hammock. After a period of closure and land sales in 1976, the garden was revitalized and reopened in 2001. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized by the Garden Conservancy as a preservation project of national significance. ​ One of the garden's most celebrated features is its extensive waterlily collection, which includes over 100 varieties, some spanning more than three feet across.
