Thomas Lavergne<p>I will not be at <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/LPS25" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LPS25</span></a>, Europe's largest 🛰️ Earth Observation conference, in Vienna this week.</p><p>But many of my good friends and colleagues will, including those from <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@osi_saf" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>osi_saf</span></a></span> , <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/CCI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CCI</span></a> (Climate Change Initiative), and <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/CIMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CIMR</span></a> (the future satellite in my profile banner). Catch many of them at the <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/SeaIce" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SeaIce</span></a> session, but also <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/SoilMoisture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SoilMoisture</span></a> and <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/SMOS15" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SMOS15</span></a> sessions.</p><p>Enjoy the conference, while I enjoy some early vacation in Grenoble 😅.</p>
Phil Browne<p>Well it turns out we have 3 open positions that I should tell you about:<br>- <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Assimilation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Assimilation</span></a> of <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/GNSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GNSS</span></a>-R to improve the land surface (in the same team as me) <br>- Assimilation of <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/CIMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CIMR</span></a> in the coupled system looking at the ocean (we've already started preparing for the sea ice part; on the <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ESA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ESA</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/DANTEX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DANTEX</span></a> project I'm involved in)<br>- A climate reanalysis scientist looking after the quality of <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ERA6" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ERA6</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://jobs.ecmwf.int/Home/Job" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">jobs.ecmwf.int/Home/Job</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>Get in touch!</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/FediJobs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FediJobs</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ScienceJobs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScienceJobs</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Hiring" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Hiring</span></a> </p><p>(Bonus section head job available if you fancy it!)</p>
Thomas Lavergne<p>not "what on Earth" but "what in Space!" 😅 </p><p>We are developing the prototype ground processor for the <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/CIMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CIMR</span></a> 🛰️ mission (&gt;= 2029).</p><p>All 20+ Polar Oceans products (including <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/SeaIce" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SeaIce</span></a> variables) and Global Land products (Soil Moisture, Snow, etc...) for the CIMR mission need documenting. Plus the documents to describe file formats, the software architecture, the future validation campaign 😂 , etc...</p><p>This is our Year 1 review with ESA, so many of the docs are still draft.</p><p>-&gt; <a href="https://github.com/CIMR-L2PAD/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">github.com/CIMR-L2PAD/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
anlomedad<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@lavergnetho" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>lavergnetho</span></a></span> <br>That's exciting! May they be nice to you and offer delicious cookies! <br>If I may be so bold, I have a few questions wrt satellite use.<br>Is <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Sentinel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sentinel</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/CIMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CIMR</span></a> going to be a dedicated satellite or does the device go piggy-back on another? <br>When new measurement devices are introduced, is it part of the plan to later consolidate satellite use, ie put more and more devices on a single sat where compatible, once the first of their carriers get de-orbited and replaced? <br>What is the weight &amp; life expectancy of the new CIMR <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/satellite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>satellite</span></a> and what is its decommissioning procedure –&nbsp;burn up or shoot outside Earth's orbit?</p><p>You probably guessed it: my questions relate to <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/sustainability" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sustainability</span></a> in general, to space debris, and most of all: the impact of burnt-up satellite material on chemistry and climate. <br>An institution like <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/ESA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ESA</span></a> can set the tone so rogue, unregulated actors like <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Starlink" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Starlink</span></a> might soon be reigned-in before their bad biz plan lets 27t of satellite material burn up –&nbsp;every single day!</p>
Thomas Lavergne<p>So excited/humbled to have <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/ESA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ESA</span></a> and my partner institutes in <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Oslo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Oslo</span></a> this week to discuss <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/CIMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CIMR</span></a> LEVEL-2 products!</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/CIMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CIMR</span></a> is an upcoming <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Sentinel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sentinel</span></a> satellite that will help us monitor the <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Earth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Earth</span></a> and its <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Climate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Climate</span></a> in the polar regions.</p><p>We are at the start of an exciting 4-year activity, the <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/L2PAD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>L2PAD</span></a>, to prepare <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> algorithms and products for this satellite. Can't wait to meet the team, it will be the first time I meet some of them in person.</p>
