(August 18, 2025) -- Following the passage of the Rescissions Act of 2025, which defunded the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and left the organization without operating funds for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2025, CPB no longer can absorb costs and manage the Next Generation Warning System (NGWS) grant program.</p><p>Congress recognized the essential role of local public media stations in protecting public safety when it created the NGWS grant program in 2022 and appropriated $136 million over three years to support that mission. Sesame Street, while targeted often at urban kids, showed me, a rural kid, what stoop life was; what a city transit train was. I had no idea. Trains carried grain and coal not people!</p><p>The rural stations that served me are really in danger. David Scott Moyer<p>NPR is not going away. PBS is not going away. The corporation that distributed federal funds to them is. It can be brought back if federal funding ever resumes. For now, NPR will hardly change. It gets less than 2% of its funding through the CPB. PBS gets around 15%, so some rural stations may suffer if non governmental donors don't step up.
