What to do if bullying? Try consistent boundaries
1. do not writhe or waver. (Movement attracts the bully)
2. do not attempt to appease. (Any offer is interpreted as weakness and obtains thrust)
3. flee to a safe position that you could hold with support
4. then stand still. Set limits on how others treat you. Affirm boundaries (The bully will redirect attacks eventually)
5. connect: turn to a trusted person, reach out only to someone you feel well about
6. offer backing, foster, become accomplice, enjoy
I was watching some 80s movie the other night, and the laser printer made dot-matrix printer noises. It was similarly distracting. My partner didn't even notice. Is it the way our brains are wired?
#Editors, download my example #StyleSheets for #academic #editing, #medical editing, and #fiction editing. If you create similar style sheets for each of your #editing projects, you’ll find it easier to maintain #consistency throughout each #manuscript. https://www.kokedit.com/library_stylesheets.php #QuadEditors
Why do we call it COVID-19, not Wuhan flu, but still call bird flu 'bird flu'? #consistency
#Journals, on your #website, please specify what #style #manual you follow (e.g., #AMA, #APA, #CSE) so that #authors — & #editors — can decrease your #workload in prepping accepted #manuscripts for #publication. #Consistency helps your #readers. Thank you. #AmEditing #science #academia #publishing
Huh. I wasn't aware the second argument could now be a union. It has some surprising - perhaps inconsistent - behaviour:
>>> issubclass(int, int | None)
True
>>> issubclass(int, None | int)
True
>>> issubclass(int, (int, None))
True
>>> issubclass(int, (None, int))
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: issubclass() arg 2 must be a class, a tuple of classes, or a union
>>> issubclass(int, None)
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: issubclass() arg 2 must be a class, a tuple of classes, or a union
I would have thought the second form should throw an exception like the last two.
So if this is called a "backspace", shouldn't this be called "forwardspace"?
Long shot, but does anyone working on #database #consistency know if Adya intended for the definition of G2-item to allow cycles *with* predicate anti-dependencies? For years, based on the surrounding text, I thought the answer was no: G2-item is a cycle in the union of write-write, write-read, and item read-write dependencies. But I just went back to the original definition and it technically *allows* predicate rw edges; it just says at *least* one is an item.
No quibble with Konate's yellow card there. But why haven't half a dozen Wolves players also been booked for similar fouls?

It's tricky to keep terminology and phrases about technology out of character conversations when writing my story when there is no way the characters would know of it.
I kept using "under the radar" in the last two scenes. Although it takes place in the far future, the place where the characters live have never seen such a thing nor would have any use for it.
I had to go edit it out several places and find alternative words.
Oops!
@kasperd TBH, the problem is not #CloudFlare hosting but the way they basically refuse to act upon legitimate complaints and how they enable beyond-#StochasticTerrorism by the #Hategrooming forum that is #KiwiFarms!
I mean, you do you but I'd not trust #ClownFlare nor #Hetzner and would rather stick with a provider (i.e. #ClouDNS, #netcup, #contabo, #myLoc) that basically says 'Everything legal as per our juristiction is fine.' than put myself on the whim of a "#FreezePeach" hoster that'll fire me once bigger customers threaten to quit hosting with them (see #DropKiwifarms & #DropCloudflare) or just yeet me because some employee dislikes my site (aka getting #Hetznered)...

If you want your Firefox windows to look like native GNOME/GTK windows (with rounded corners on all four sides):
1. In the location bar, enter:
about:config
2. In the search, enter:
rounded
3. Set the value of widget.gtk.rounded-bottom-corners.enabled to true
Man… there really are people out there who think consistency in software UIUX really triumphs all else.
LOL ok…
Like, why does everything have to fit in this mold? Things are inherently different from purpose to workflow to user’s level of experience with tech.
You can strive for consistency but don’t let it be the only guiding force. You’d rather degrade usability so long as it’s cOnSiStEnT?! C’monnnnn… bfrfr

Small details that annoy my information architecture brain: in our Jira, the order or assignee / reporter is not the same in the kanban preview vs actual story. I mess up a lot of assignments due to this.
I wonder if there is a reason for that?

I think I just finished the tune selection for episode 168 of the podcast! Most people don't realise how much work it really is to come up with a selection that flows for roughly an hour, month after month, *every* month, especially when I don't repeat records as a matter of policy! Closing in on the fourteenth birthday of the show...continuing to build a solid body of work.
When driving, I was suddenly struck by a realization that there is one (more) thing about me that has been consistent going all the way back to my childhood.
Back in my junior high school days, my mother once (without my awareness or consent) arranged for me to have an "under-the-table" job getting paid $20 a week during the winter to get up early enough to stop on the way to school and sweep the snow from the entry area of a (admittedly rad) local bakery. She was very upset and confused when I said I was not interested, calling me lazy and inconsiderate.
What she did not understand, and what remains true about me to this day, is that I would gleefully pay $4 a day to get another hour in bed before having to get up.
Did I also make it a point thenceforth to stop in on my way to school to pick up a donut partially out of spite? Yes, yes I did. Because I'd also have paid $5 a day for more sleep, and their donuts were cheap.
I've been asked (for reasons) to put together a short bit on trends in #privacy and #dataprotection space over the next few years.
I've got quite a few thoughts on new developments, but would love to ask my fellow #privacy, #AI, #tech #lawfedi, #academic friends -- what impactful areas do you think will drive #privacy and #dataprotection ?
1) the impact of existing and future laws (like the #AIAct), on how we deal with new and novel #tech and its use of #personaldata
2) Regulatory and #enforcement shifts, particularly around the role of the #DPO, conflicts of interest, and #crossborder disputes
3) The death of #onestopshop and a breakdown of the #consistency mechanism as we know it?!
4) More #US states adopting #privacylaws similar to (but likely weaker than) the #CCPA. WAY more development of niche #dataprotection laws on AI, #biometrics & #kidsprivacy
5) More alignment from other countries on a #GDPR-like framework - notably in #India and countries in the Global South.
6) Tools like #chatgpt and other #privtech gradually starting to muscle out some of the manual #privacyops workloads, since there simply aren't enough folks capable of handling mountains of #DPAs, #TIAs, #DPIAs, #ROPAs, etc., etc.
7) Some sort of resolution on the whole new #ePrivacyRegs.
8) More muscling for digital / data #sovereignity & data #localization by countries around the world.
What say you ? Do these sound plausible or crazy? What do you think will be prioritized in the next year or five?
