Jon Sullivan<p>I’m generally a bit skeptical of de-extinction plans, when we have so many wild species on the brink of extinction that need our help. Still, I find myself excited at the prospect of Peter Jackson helping to bring back NZ’s nine species of moa. Peter can spend his money however he likes, and this is *much* better than buying another big yacht or a social media company.</p><p><a href="https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/south-island-giant-moa-de-extinction-plans-sir-peter-jackson-teams-up-with-colossal-biosciences/5M5QPE2VWVBYRAXPWH6OWOO4DY/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nzherald.co.nz/nz/south-island</span><span class="invisible">-giant-moa-de-extinction-plans-sir-peter-jackson-teams-up-with-colossal-biosciences/5M5QPE2VWVBYRAXPWH6OWOO4DY/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/deextinction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>deextinction</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/moa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>moa</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/nz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/conservation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>conservation</span></a></p>

Lukas VFN 🇪🇺<p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Deextinction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Deextinction</span></a> is a BS scam and a distraction from real conservation work. It's the AI of biology. They are genetically modifying animals to superficially resemble extinct species while vaguely gesturing towards sci-fi ideas about finding/reconstructing entire genomes. We are nowhere near this stage, and it's doubtful we ever will. And guess what, that still wouldn't bring anything back, because living things are much more than their DNA on so many levels.</p>
Yogi Jaeger<p>Public service announcement: this is *not* a dire wolf. </p><p>It is a genetically modified grey wolf made to resemble an extinct species, so a bullshit company can raise more money for their bullshit projects. </p><p><a href="https://spore.social/tags/Deextinction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Deextinction</span></a> is a scam on so many levels I don't even know where to begin. It will *not* help us save endangered species. Instead, we should spend our money on preserving their habitats *before* they go extinct.</p>
Ricós has moved<p>This Dire Wolf de-extinction seems fishy to me:<br>- If I understood correctly, CLB edited grey wolf genes to produce what they *think* a dire wolf looked like. No DW genes were used or recreated, right?<br>- With that few animals, won't you get a genetic bottleneck soon? Are there plans to achieve MVP?<br>- Plans to integrate them in an ecosystem?</p><p>Their purpose might be just showing off their biotech. Hoping I'm wrong.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/DireWolf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DireWolf</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/ColossalLaboratoriesAndBiosciences" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ColossalLaboratoriesAndBiosciences</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/DeExtinction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DeExtinction</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Biology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Biology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/Biotech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Biotech</span></a></p>
