The ‘3.5% rule’ discovered by Erica Chenoweth is really interesting.

Also the number of demonstrators in the former #GDR, who in 1989 ultimately contributed to the peaceful overthrow of the system in #EastGermany, was nearly 3.5%.

The Werner Seelenbinder Turm/ Tower at the site of the former Zentralstadion, Leipzig.

The home of RB Leipzig - "Germany's most hated club" - was built within the terraces of the old stadium, itself built by local people from the ruins of WWII.

Seelenbinder was an Olympic wrestler, anti-fascist and communist executed by the Nazis.

Kleines Bad Großschönau

Open-air community swimming pool near Zittau, Sachsen. It's great that lots of these valuable community resources survived reunification. In the early days of the DDR, places like this were often built by hand by the local community - literally everyone doing what they could.

A classic.

Lok Leipzig were a good European team whereas the 70s was a decade of woe for Hearts. Lok won the first tie 2-0 but Hearts demolished Lok 5-1 in an unlikely turnaround in Edinburgh. Leipzig applauded the Hearts players at full-time.

My father-in-law remembers the game - he played for Robur Zittau then - and attended many of the DDR national games at Leipzig's Zentralstadion.

Almost forgot about #fensterfreitag / #windowfriday. But there is this little shot from the Darss on the Baltic Sea, that I took some years ago with my Bessa R3M on film.
There is no irony in it; it has a sentimental note rather. The claim for peace is not exactly poignant. But at least it is there.
