What are we playing DS/3DS games on that isn't a DS/3DS. If you get what I mean?

The DS/3DS is another generation of Nintendo handheld that for the most part passed me by, and I'd very much like to remedy that.

But how!

I'm very tempted to find a second hand 3DS XL, but I'm unsure how well those allow for...you know, emulation things.

Here's the article I was working on today, and the first I've written for The Register in a hot minute: a look at a new, generated-from-actual-1980s-hardware, 1.5-million-strong test suite for the Intel 286 and compatibles.

In 2025. Yes. Emulator devs are a different breed, I tell you, and we're all the richer for 'em.

The Register · Vintage computing boffin releases expansive Intel 286 test suiteBy Gareth Halfacree

Just spotted this crazy person taking #emulation and #Android #gaming to the next level.

They have their Samsung Galaxy S25+ 'watercooled' (CPU 45°C and battery at 24°C) and playing Skyrim (𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘚𝘬𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘮)

Inventive? Yes.
Dangerous? Also yes
I suppose #gaming is for all types, after all!

There's been a flurry of coverage over the last week or two about the "reborn" Commodore 64 home computer. A company bought the name (and other IP rights) and is issuing a claimed fully-compatible update of the classic machine.

You can argue about how faithful a reproduction it is; it's not using the original 6510 CPU and other support chips, but rather is done on an FPGA. They claim it's not emulation, but arguably it is - it's being emulated in hardware, rather than in software.

But the funniest thing to me is that 43 years after the introduction of the C64, with the way computing prices have plummeted for that whole stretch, the base model of the new one is more expensive than the original was. It's US $349, while the C64's price quickly dropped to $199 after its introduction.

Yes, I know about inflation and the rest. I still find it funny.

Hey, it works! No more reaching under the control panel when switching between 4-way games like Pac-Man, and 8-way games like The Simpsons!

Drilled 4 new mounting holes under the control panel to replace my old OMNI2 (Sanwa JLW) joystick with a new Sanwa JLF. Replaced the "Select" button I had mapped to Enter (and never used) with the 4-way / 8-way toggle duo-button. Rearranged some wiring... And it's good to go!

Highly recommend this bad boy!

Now to get it all scripted up so it automatically switches modes when launching the game. (Will be a little extra effort, because their Linux support software assumes Debian/Retropie, and I'm on Arch/Manjaro).

Also, now that I have one LED button, am I going to be a lunatic and light this whole thing up now? (maybe just the 4 admin buttons)

Replied in thread

It was bothering me that my DualShock 2 controller had some serious analog drift in some emulated games, until I moved them in circles.

Maybe it was the USB adapter not initializing properly. But no, it's right there in page 13 of the original PS2 User's Guide... 🤔
