stib
This is why I am glad I know how to use the command line: I have ~ fifty thousand stop-motion images that have been copied off camera SD cards. The camera numbers them from 00001 to 09999 and then wraps around (I don't know why it doesn't use the last digit), and the cards were taken out of the camera and copied into separate folders on a HD, but because the camera has two slots, sometimes the cards were not transferred in sequential order, so card 3 might be older than card 4.
So I have a bunch of photos in semi-sequential order, with many duplicate file names. And each one is about 25Mb in Sony ARW format.
There is a brilliant command line program called #ExifTool that can just grab the exif metadata from the image. This is waaay faster than opening it for viewing. I can use it to grab the CreateDate metadata which tells me when the photo was taken, and use another command line tool `sed` to format it into an appropriate file name.
So I can use the command line to traverse through all the folders, get the exif info of each ARW file and copy the image to a new directory where it will be renamed according to its creation time, and thus sorted into order.
And in the meantime I can post on social media.

Yehor 🇺🇦
Decided that I needed a self-hosted alternative to a Google Timeline and now I have #Dawarich.

Home Assistant is sending my location updates there, so I don't even need another client. offbyone
years ago in uni we were given an introduction to Unix and thank god some of that stuck otherwise this would have been so. much. harder.

in no particular order I needed

- a terminal window
- a brief web search for cd and ls (and recall that cd is case sensitive)
- a visit back to the Linux Mint install instructions to see how to check a hash
- grab the gtkhash tool from the applications installer and check the hash
- follow the install instructions on the Exiftool page, plus
- so many reminders that ctrl C and V aren't going to do much (it's right click for cut and paste)
- navigating the helpful but ultimately not suggestion in Terminal to install its hashing tool, followed by pulling up the hashalot man page to confirm that nope, that's not going to do what I want

so that's cd, ls, man plus assorted bits and bobs

this is a learning curve.

exiftool is worth it though. 2/2

#ExifTool #linux

As of right now #hugo only seems to read #EXIF tags, so my photo titles aren't showing up when a #hugo theme tries to display captions.

Going through 100s of photos and copying the
Title
to the
Description
would be a royal pain. But luckily #exiftool comes to the rescue. For an entire directory of JPEG files I can simply run:

exiftool -tagsFromFile @ -'ImageDescription<Title' *.jpg

This copies the content of the
Title
tag into the #EXIF
ImageDescription
tag. And now the captions show up :)
