Ezra Klein makes some insightful comments in this interview on the Leading podcast;
https://alastaircampbell.org/2025/04/129-trumps-america-fear-polarisation-and-the-future-ezra-klein/
For example, he points out that the Democrats' reaction to Orange Stalin 1.0 was to become the party of the early 21st century status quo. Alienating a huge number of allies, and a big chunk of the electorate, motivated by a post-Occupy goal of dismantling that status quo. This backfired on them big time in 2024.

I wonder how happy our editors are going to be with this conversation.

Gillian Tett (Financial Times) interviewed by Ezra Klein, just plugged David Graeber's "Debt"
(And in case you're curious, yes I am in fact binging Klein today. He's good, but ye gads do I have to brace myself for political commentary. Given his podcast's slipping further behind the NYT paywall, where episodes are unpublished after a couple of weeks, this means having to store a large number of long, large, space-consuming episodes until I can stand to hear them. And am done hearing them (they're usually worth a 2nd listen, at least).)
That quote above reflects a realisation I've come to myself that a major function of government is in addressing risks which cannot be meaningfully and/or effectively addressed by private enterprise, or by smaller governmental units. See today's related news that the Orange Turd has refused Federal disaster relief status to a state hit by recent storms: Fucking Arkansas of all places. That is one HELLA RED state:
https://lite.cnn.com/2025/04/23/weather/trump-denied-disaster-aid-arkansas-tornadoes/index.html
That risk bit ties in to my (yes, still-in-process) #tootstorm on orthodox economic failings. I'd add a few other roles:
Coordination problems. A/K/A political decisionmaking. How do disparate interests come to agreement or bypass agreement entirely in allowing Shit To Get Done?
Public goods. The provision of goods for which market-based prices intrinsically fall below cost of provisioning. Roads, lighthouses, education, healthcare / sanitation / public health, welfare services, weather prediction, census, postal service, in some cases telecoms both wired and broadcast.
Risk, as noted above. Incidentally, I'd put national defence and general social safety net in this camp, along with national disaster relief.
Probably some others though I'm having trouble articulating / thinking of these. Regulation, courts, standardisation (look up Herbert Hoover's role here as Secretary of Commerce and the Bureau of Weights and Measures), long-term research funding.
But risk is a huge part of it.
The government is a long-term risk-management enterprise.

There is no such thing as "efficiency". Efficiency must always toward a goal.

The [Constitutional] Emergency is HERE!
The president of the United States is disappearing people to a Salvadoran prison for terrorists: a prison built for disappearance, a prison where there is no education or remediation or recreation, a prison where the only way out, according to El Salvador’s justice minister, is in a coffin.
The president says he wants to send “homegrown” Americans there next.
This is the emergency. Like it or not, it’s here.

Tom Friedman had an incredibly satisfying conversation with #EzraKlein
The Department of Government Efficiency promises a leaner, fraud-free government, but its actions suggest otherwise. Even supporters like Santi Ruiz now question its true goals and effectiveness.

Ezra Klein's new "abundance" agenda explained:
Democrats Need to Face Why Trump Won
After the last election, there were all kinds of theories about where Democrats went wrong. But now, four months later, we have a lot more data – and it tells a few clear stories.
David Shor is the head of data science at Blue Rose Research, a Democratic polling firm, which does an enormous amount of surveying of the electorate.
This information doesn’t just help explain what went wrong for Democrats in 2024. It’s a set of hard truths they need to keep in mind to mount a comeback in 2026 and 2028.

AOC has been good. This guy also looks like a player. Ezra Klein's latest podcast (A Democrat Who Is Thinking Differently, Feb. 19) is a convo with Jake Auchincloss, a Dem who is new to me and has interesting ideas. Recorded in January, it's completely relevant, especially on issues such as crypto, housing & the attention economy.
2) Klein leads with facts, historical realities both long past and recent. He shine’s a light on a supine, craven, #GOP controlled, #NPC Congress which stands abjectly submissive in the face of the #Musk - #Trump duopoly. It is a shameful moment.
1) This is as good a piece of opinion #journalism as one is likely to find. I have little doubt that this #EzraKlein #podcast essay will infuriate some on the left with its mild critique of some of the #Biden admins’ failures
- ESSENTIAL VIEWING - "Trump is acting like a KING because he is too WEAK to GOVERN as a president." He's "flooding the zone" with BS hoping you don't notice how weak he is.
Ahhh, the Stenographers are claiming they knew Elon was a wrong'un all along.....when many of us had our suspicions confirmed when he attacked the people rescuing those cave boys in Thailand.
