Dumb question that I was always too afraid to ask:

I know how the #Fediverse and its federation works. It's intuitive and familiar to me; I mean, I even host my own instance.

But I never understood how interaction cross-software is supposed to work. In theory, I can use whatever #ActivityPub software I want and still interact with everyone else. But in practice that just... isn't the case, right?

I mean, for text it's quite simple: I write a short post on #Mastodon and people on #GoToSocial or #Misskey or whatever can see and read that same post and interact with it. They can see my profile and it appears on their instance in their style and with their features.

Even outside of microblogging I still get it. A super-long post on #Friendica or #Diaspora appears on my timeline, too. Their profiles might have more fields than I can see here, but that's fine.

But what's up beyond that?

I can see #Pixelfed posts here, converted into image galleries. But what about the other way 'round? If someone on Pixelfed follows my Mastodon account, they can't see any of my non-image posts, right?

What about #PeerTube and such niche software? I guess I could follow a PeerTube account as a microblogger and see their videos and descriptions in my timeline. Video comments are replies.

But the other way 'round? How are they supposed to interact with Friendica or Pixelfed users? PeerTube doesn't even have a "timeline".

Doesn't that feature disparity undermine the whole idea of the #Fediverse or am I missing something?

PSA for Misskey/fork admins: Misskey relies on Redis for long-term data storage. It is not just a caching solution, and wiping redis will result in permanent data loss.

This is contrary to most guides and documentation regarding redis, because
Misskey is actually using it wrong. But unfortunately, lots of data is only stored in Redis with no way to re-create it from Postgres:
- All notifications
- Most timelines, if Fanout Timelines is enabled
- Charts and graphs
- Federation jobs, including delayed / scheduled jobs
- Antennas
- User lists
- Trending hashtags / notes
- Reversi games
- WebAuthn

If you ever lose or rollback your Redis cluster, then all of the above will be impacted. So please take regular backups!

Colto Cloud has been DDoS'd twice this week by OpenAI running from both Meta Platforms Incorporated and Microsoft Corporation.

They have in particular been targeting FloofTube by trying to download all of the videos. I blocked them at the time of noticing but since this heavily impacts availability to my online services I have run an IP log search against all OpenAI attempts that scrape my websites.

The following IP networks are now permanently banned from my infrastructure:
4.151.241.240/28, 4.227.36.0/25, 13.83.167.128/28, 20.14.99.96/28, 20.25.151.224/28, 20.42.10.176/28, 20.57.67.40/30, 20.97.189.96/28, 20.168.18.32/28, 20.169.6.224/28, 20.169.7.48/28, 20.171.53.224/28, 20.171.123.64/29, 20.171.206.0/23, 20.215.214.16/28, 23.98.186.160/27, 23.98.186.192/31, 24.199.118.115/32, 31.145.16.12/32, 38.32.110.58/32, 40.83.2.64/28, 40.84.221.216/32, 40.84.221.224/28, 40.116.73.209/32, 51.8.102.0/24, 51.8.155.48/28, 52.156.77.154/32, 52.159.227.32/28, 52.190.190.16/32, 52.230.152.0/24, 52.230.163.42/32, 52.230.164.182/32, 52.255.111.0/24, 57.141.0.0/21, 64.23.143.131/32, 66.220.149.19/32, 68.221.67.160/27, 68.221.67.199/32, 68.221.75.16/28, 74.7.35.0/24, 74.7.36.0/24, 103.252.201.0/24, 104.131.50.213/32, 104.210.140.128/28, 134.209.176.183/32, 135.234.64.0/24, 135.237.131.192/27, 138.68.129.105/32, 138.197.150.3/32, 143.110.213.48/32, 143.110.213.51/32, 172.178.140.144/28, 172.182.192.0/22, 172.182.204.0/24, 172.182.208.0/21, 172.182.224.0/24, 172.203.30.218/32, 172.203.190.128/28, 172.213.11.144/28, 172.213.12.112/28, 172.213.21.112/28, 172.213.21.158/31, 185.50.71.199/32, 188.166.156.163/32, 2a03:2880::/40

Rule 5 of red.fox.yt is: "The use of data from this instance is prohibited for use in any machine learning (or AI) technologies."

The same rule is present on all my platforms and will not be tolerated.

Fedi admins: what are you planning to do about the Online Safety Act from the UK government?

If your instance is hosted elsewhere but with users, visitors or federating servers in the UK, what are you intending to do about it?

Geoblock the UK?

IANAL so I've blocked all traffic for all UK users trying to access this instance. I'll need clearer guidance on age verification for Mastodon/ActivityPub, and I don't have the time/resources to deal with whatever's going on with the law in the UK. If you're visiting from the UK, you'll unfortunately see this page. #fediadmin #ageverification

⚠️ FOLLOWUP PSA ⚠️

if you have open registrations on your instance this current spam wave would be a great impetus to switch to approval-based signups

the extra moderation workload for having fully open signups is MASSIVE and for basically zero reward. it doesn't take much time or effort to vet and approve new users, but it takes much more to clean up the damage a shitload of spam accounts can do
