Cusco is the city that has been continuously inhabited for the longest time in all of South America. I admire its long and straight streets, lined with perfectly fitted stones. I sometimes wish I could have visited it during the heights of the Inca empire!

On 26th July 1533, the Spanish killed the Inca emperor Atahualpa by garrotting him. They threw the body in an unmarked grave, which devastated the Incas as the emperor needed to be mummified in order for his soul to pass over into the next stage of life and for his son Topatauchi to succeed him as emperor.
NB: Some historians state that the date was actually 28.8.1533.

Happy Equinox!

(Description: Every September equinox, when the rainy season started, the Inca celebrated Coya Raymi (meaning festival of the empress). This festival honoured the empress (the coya) and also Killa, the moon goddess. The mummies of previous emperors and empresses were paraded through the streets and given offerings.)

" 'Our analyses show that the population at Machu Picchu was highly heterogeneous, with individuals exhibiting genetic ancestries associated with groups from regions throughout the Inca Empire including the coast, highlands and Amazonia,' says study co-author Richard Burger, an archaeologist at #Yale.

While royals only came to #MachuPicchu during the dry season, a community of servants lived at the site year round."

The Spanish overcame the #IncaEmpire in 1 day by capturing the emperor Atahualpa.

Fake news! It was a process that took decades of battles.

E.g. in April 1536, Manco Inca escaped from the Spanish, rescued his principal wife, Curi Ocllo, & fled #Cusco to plan a #rebellion.

Exactly 3 years later, in April 1539, Gonzalo Pizarro set out to capture the rebels.
Would Manco & Curi survive his pursuit?
Find out in Intrepid Dudettes of the Inca Empire

Today, on 8th Aug 1915, María Rostworowski was born in #Lima.

A prolific #Peruvian historian, focussing on the #IncaEmpire, she won numerous awards throughout her life until she died in 2016.

For my research for 'Intrepid Dudettes of the
Inca Empire', I've used her books: 'Pachacutec', 'History of the Inca Realm' and 'Doña Francisca Pizarro: una ilustre mestiza.'

An interesting fact: after the death of her second husband, she went to the Peruvian Amazon to work as a missionary in 1961.
