Looking for explanations…
Years ago, my ex & I had a couple of family & friends bbqs on Jan 26. There were no flags, no discussions of Australian history, no mention of Indigenous Australians. It was just an excuse for a day off, & a nice gathering of friends. It certainly wasn’t a big deal, or something non-Indigenous Australians felt passionate about in the 80s, prior to the bicentenary.

I think the bicentenary really sparked things off. It was a huge party & the events in Sydney were spectacular. Discussions about how Indigenous Australians felt about it all were a big wake-up call for many other Australians, whose learning of Australian history had excluded any detailed references to Indigenous Australians, let alone explained the horrendous impacts of white “settlement” on Indigenous people, both at the time & ongoing.

And of course others chose to respond reactively, exposing their profound ignorance as well as a lack of compassion & often, their racism.

Progress since then has been limited, with the failure of The Voice referendum being a huge source of shame for many Australians. #IndigenousAustralians #AustraliaDay

Resisting ‘deliberately divisive’ 26 January debate, First Nations leaders seek a broader view of history https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/jan/24/resisting-deliberately-divisive-26-january-debate-first-nations-leaders-seek-a-broader-view-of-history?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

As the Traditional Custodians and title owners, they have been driving the future of the town through #Gundjeihmi #Aboriginal Corporation Jabiru Town. The corporation engaged a strategic design team to complete a Stage 1 Masterplan and business case for Jabiru: economic development and tourism planning specialist Stafford Strategy, architecture and urban design practice Common (previously known as NAAU), and landscape designer Enlocus. For the more detailed Stage 2 Lakeside Precinct Plan, this team was joined by GHD for specialist hydrological engineering input.

"As John Doyle, a partner at Common, explained, the central question of the project was around 'how a place that had mostly been given over to processes of extraction could be reimagined with a new economy.' The team used economic and urban modelling to determine the infrastructure required to transition Jabiru from a town built to serve the needs of the miners and their families, to a tourism-focused model designed to provide ongoing economic opportunities for the local community and Traditional Custodians.

"What is compelling about this project is not simply that it is the Traditional Custodians driving the future of the town, but that the design process appears to be occurring in the form of a 'yarn.' Typically, a business case is developed separately from an architectural masterplan – but in this project, the process was an iterative loop of knowledge, ideas and experiences shared between all facets of the design team and the client. Common partner Ben Milbourne described one back-and-forth involving Stafford Strategy’s economic modelling, Common and Enlocus’s architectural and landscape modelling and masterplanning, and the GAC’s direct feedback throughout the process. According to Doyle, this process was 'messy, but great by virtue of that.'

"I found that there was also a #cultural and economic storytelling layer to the new masterplan. Previously, Jabiru was a turnoff on the highway before you reached the mining town. As Doyle explains, 'The new masterplan recalibrates the sequence of arrival to pivot the economy away from extraction to a people-based tourism hub.' Now, as you approach the town, you experience the surrounding views toward the #KakaduEscarpment, and it is clear that there is a deeper cultural narrative waiting to be discovered.

"This storytelling sensibility is echoed in the programmatic arrangement of the masterplan and in reference designs for each of the key buildings developed in consultation with the Traditional Custodians. In the visualization, a suite of accommodation options sweeps around the lake frontage to serve tourists and to provide ongoing sustainable economic opportunities for the Traditional Custodians. The masterplan also includes other new community infrastructure, such as the #Bininj (Traditional Owner) Resource Centre and housing; this infrastructure is all designed with sequential and incremental layers of enclosure that take their visual cues from the Jabiru landscape. For example, the proposed rammed- earth walls echo the striated geology of the escarpment. Common describes the strong relationship between inside and outside: 'The [envisaged] buildings, and the programs within, are organized as a series of discrete enclosures [that] allows the landscape to flow throughout the facility, ensuring that visitors have a constant connection with the celebrated Kakadu landscape.'"

Read more: https://architectureau.com/articles/jabiru-stage-1-masterplan/

#IndigenousAustralians #CulturalPreservation #CulturalConnection #Dreamtime #Storytelling

Magpieblog
' [The] research speaks to the underrecognized sophistication of the people who occupied landscapes long before the arrival of Europeans. In Australia, the work has helped further undermine colonial-era assumptions that native people were aimless wanderers, as well as claims of terra nullius—that the land belonged to no one when the first British settlers arrived. 無 Mu
https://yourforestpodcast.com/good-fire-podcast - a podcast about tending the land with fire and other natural wisdom by experienced elders, younger native people, and scholars, mostly indigenous. I was a little curious about how people traditionally used fire in their farming. Now, I'm a believer.

I learned that some native people do a "cultural" burn after they know the land and for something specific in the landscape, e.g., a species or just the whole system, but not all native people do a "cultural" burn. A human-managed forest has trees that are spaced out. One thing this does is allow precipitation to reach the soil and the roots.

I also learned that intentional fires are not just for preventing catestrophic burns that ruin the topsoil. Burning an area causes native plants and grasses to emerge. I bet you can easily raise plants from seed in a swidden. A burned area stays thinned out for eight years. They burn next to something green, next to water, or when rain is imminent. Those with traditional experience say it will go out eventually. People also burn to prevent ticks.

I had to search for a video that they mentioned in season 2, episode 3, but I'm not sure if I found it. Here is what I found: Gathering Voices Society on Vimeo, https://vimeo.com/user105935556.

Here's a fire-related quote that I've posted before:

"low-intensity fires were created in such a way that they did not get out of hand and did not harm trees and other large vegetation. Burning released nutrients to the soil, stimulated regrowth—which provided forage for game and other wildlife—and prevented a buildup of fuel, which would otherwise result in disastrous wildfires. It also created and maintained prairies and meadows, increased the abundance of food-producing bulbs and grasses, enhanced the density and diversity of plants, reduced competition, and helped control insects and disease."

"The effect of these practices ... was to maintain large and small areas at a mid-succession stage by simulating natural disturbance. The disturbances often reduced the dominance of existing communities, creating openings for colonization by other species. While the biomass was reduced temporarily, it was more than made up for by the increased vigor of the new growth. Some areas were burned every two or three years, others every five or six, while others were burned every fifteen years or so." (One-Straw Revolutionary, chapter five)

A similar podcast is The Big Burn, https://laist.com/podcasts/the-big-burn, but only the third and fourth episodes contain indigenous knowledge.

I read that southeast North "American" natives used to burn underbrush, grass, and weeds, too.
