Tyler Smith<p>A handy trick for importing <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/kml" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kml</span></a> files into <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/OpenStreetMap" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenStreetMap</span></a> with <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/gpsbabel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gpsbabel</span></a>:</p><p>```<br>gpsbabel -i kml -f transects.kml -x track,faketime=20120901000001 -o gpx -F transects.gpx<br>```</p><p>As I understand it, importing kml into OSM is deliberately broken by most tools, to discourage users from digitizing features directly from <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/Google" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Google</span></a> maps for use in OSM, which would violate copyrights and cause problems for the project.</p><p>In this case, a student created a transect map in Google Earth, and I want to use it on OSMand. Which shouldn't infringe on anyone's copyright.</p><p>Of course, if Google hadn't long abandoned the "Don't Be Evil" facade, maybe this wouldn't be necessary.</p>
