Albert Cardona<p>Deployments of computer vision applications in the wild appear to not have been vetted much.</p><p>Left, "the camera detected a vehicle".<br>Right, "the camera detected a person".</p><p>Turns out, spider webs are adversarial for a system that didn't include them in the training data.</p><p>Seems developers didn't think of spider webs. There may have not been any in their labs.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/ComputerVision" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ComputerVision</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/MachineLearningFail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MachineLearningFail</span></a></p>
Albert Cardona<p>A ladybug, according to <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/iNaturalist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>iNaturalist</span></a>'s machine learning model. Mind you, a model trained with a lot of heavily and expertly curated ground truth data.</p><p>Of course this is anything but. It's a clutch of eggs from an assassin bug, Zelus renardii.</p><p><a href="https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/237839728" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">inaturalist.org/observations/2</span><span class="invisible">37839728</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Hemiptera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Hemiptera</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/entomology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>entomology</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/AIFail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AIFail</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/MachineLearningFail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MachineLearningFail</span></a></p>
Albert Cardona<p>According to the <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/iNaturalist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>iNaturalist</span></a> automated classifier, this is a “common hoopoe”, a bird we Catalans call a “puput”. My laugh was heard from the other side of the mountains. Opening up to suggestions from beyond nearby then yielded a springtail genus—what I initially expected.</p><p>Seira sp. springtail (tentative) <a href="http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/178251249" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">http://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">inaturalist.org/observations/1</span><span class="invisible">78251249</span></a> Ridiculously small. Only saw it because I was staring at a crevice cricket and these critters were scurrying around under the strong phone light</p><p>Night photography isn’t my thing—no equipment, no training, no practice, and barely ever the occasion.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/AIFail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AIFail</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/MachineLearningFail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MachineLearningFail</span></a></p>
