On TV: a giant Hallmark Channel float, appropriate for their Christmas movie focus. What it should've had: some sort of take that against Great American Family (maybe a cameo by a gay couple from one of their films)?
On TV: Jimmy Fallon gets a parade float presence? (*Hits the mute button*)
On TV: the Goku balloon. The announcers seem to talk him up some, mentioning he's one of the most popular anime characters of all time?
On TV: The Luffy balloon for "One Piece." The announcers note how many episodes it has, and how much time it'd take to try to catch up on part of it...
On TV: a Disney cruise float. Seems they got Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy's voice actors to do a few lines (Donald and Daisy are silent). Also a weird mix of corporate owned characters on the float: Tiana ("Princess and the Frog"), Moana (per the current sequel out), and... Spider-Man and Black Panther?
On TV: The Spider-Man balloon! And a name check of John Romita Sr. surprisingly, given the general public doesn't view superheroes as comic characters anymore---they're movie/TV characters only.
The music playing with the float is the (catchy) theme song from "Spidey and His Amazing Friends."
On TV: a peacock float to promote this parade being on Peacock. Al Roker says "how meta!"
Reminded of people who were snickering about the name "Peacock" when the service launched... which made me roll my eyes (or think of the phrase "go touch grass"), as it's an actual bird. Plus NBC's logo since the late 50s...
On TV: A SpongeBob balloon and float, with... Patchy the Pirate?! Guess that explains Tom Kenny's credit in the opening credits...
Also a Dora float and balloon.
The announcers note a new SpongeBob special's on Paramount+ (despite being a rival streaming service?).
On the Macy's Parade: Someone named Cole Escola on a giant pink flamingo. (Wikipedia says they're a playwright/Broadway star.) "They/them" pronouns get used by the announcers.
On TV: the Minnie Mouse balloon. The announcers mention "Steamboat Willie," though no mention of it being in public domain, which everyone was abuzz about way back in January. Now, it's just "whatever?" That or everyone's waiting for 2025's upcoming public domain stuff (Popeye?).
The parade opens with "Ease on Down the Road" from "The Wiz." The announcer didn't refer to NBC as "the National Broadcasting Company" (like in some years past, to sound "formal").
Looks like on Peacock, they're replaying the parade right away from the start, presumably for those of us on the west coast (who weren't getting up at 6 AM). An improvement over last year, where there was some delay in getting it onto Peacock...
And Mrs. Claus is... Puerto Rican? Wonder what the usual suspects will make of this...
Also, the parade seems to have ended on time (at the top of the hour sharp)?
On TV: Jennifer Hudson! And some well-dressed backup dancers.
But scrolling back observations:
- Nice they name-checked Romita.
- Al Roker's an animation fan, but seemingly more of old-school Western animation (Looney Tunes, etc.) vs. anime. Even if he mispronounces "saiyan," it could be worse---I recall WGN's anchors for Chicago's parade didn't know who Odie from Garfield was, and seemed to hold cartoons in contempt.
Since moving to the west coast, one downside is live TV coverage like the Macy's parade. Watching the parade = "catching the last hour or so live if I'm lucky" (via Peacock) and "see on tape-delay otherwise." If wondering why I'm not chiming in real time about all this.
The magic of T-Pain singing "All I Do Is Win" in front of a giant Jennie-O turkey really signifies that the holiday season is here.
Every year I watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and I really miss the marching bands getting more focus. Some barely even get a brief mention before the camera moves on to the next musical guest.
