Matrix room operators should probably note that a room upgrade to v12 will essentially be required next Tuesday: https://matrix.org/blog/2025/07/security-predisclosure/
Some major #Matrix protocol and security updates are incoming: https://matrix.org/blog/2025/07/security-predisclosure/
Apparently room creators will have an infinite power level on the upcoming room version 12.

I guess I have to stop procrastinating replacing my still running conduwuit homeserver and rebuild it with synapse. thanks?
@november I use #XMPP as my sole chat and call medium, and find it pretty good. (I don’t use centralized/proprietary/unsustainable/NIH services like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Discord, #Signal, #Threema, #Matrix, etc)
It’s often the case that people with the worst impression of XMPP used it ages ago, and did so with some terrible clients (Pidgin, Thunderbird)…
I’ve written a guide that helps new users stick to the best clients and servers of the ecosystem, and avoid the underdeveloped parts. Perhaps it could help you?
The Quick and Easy Guide to Jabber/XMPP
(Either way, I’d love to hear about recent experiences and pain points in using XMPP. I don’t doubt there’s a lot to be improved.)
@daniel What frustrates me the most about #Matrix is that Vector clusterfucked the client situation themselves. Having a de facto default, "go-to" Matrix client with feature parity across all platforms was one of the biggest strengths. Now we have feature split between two official clients. And the one they promote these days is still an unfinished beta. It is absolutely mindboggling how you can screw up this bad.
#Matrix spent a decade turning the problem of worrying about which extensions your server supports into worrying about which room version your server supports.
Meanwhile, the #XMPP community got their act together, reached a rough consensus on which extensions are worth pursuing, and now you can install any of the four major servers without having to worry about what extensions are working behind the scenes.
#NowReading: Neuromancer by William Gibson
The #Matrix is a world within the world, a global consensus- hallucination, the representation of every byte of data in cyberspace . . .
Case had been the sharpest data-thief in the business, until vengeful former employers crippled his nervous system. But now a new and very mysterious employer recruits him for a last-chance run.
Apple TV+ has an upcoming series adaptation of this #Cyberpunk classic in the works!

Hey @matrix, one of my admin accounts in a public room was on a server that abruptly vanished, never to return. Fortunately I had another account as admin there as a backup. But is there any way to boot that dead admin account from the member list?
I just enabled the federation on my Forgejo instance, and I don't see many ways to try it out...
I found a small blog post online about having to "sync" two repos via a common federated URL directly through the settings of each repo
Is there anything else currently supported by Forgejo at the federation level ?
If anyone wants to give it a try, feel free to contact me on Matrix https://matrix.to/#/@docyeet:halis.io or directly on my instance
Seems something has happened with #Matrix and #Fedora? Defederation, maybe? I don't know what is happening, but the rooms I'm subscribed to (forgejo, codeberg and a few more) seem to be hesitant to send me new messages. Am I missing something?
UPDATE: The problem has been fixed and federation is catching up, but it might take some time until everything is fully synchronised again.
Hello @delta ,
I am using #matrix in a professional and NGO context, and I am quite frustrated with its bugs. (broken search, frequent problems with encryption and signatures, ...)
I am not yet suggesting #deltachat for these use cases because I am not sure if it is possible to have the following things with #deltachat / #chatmail . Is DeltaChat the right tool for these cases?
@WeirdWriter
> Matrix, because it is a venture backed service
#Matrix is a protocol with its own Foundation.
*Element* is a VC-backed service, true. But it's developing Free Code, for a decentralised network, in an engineer-driven company who can easily pull a LibreOffice or NextCloud if VCs overreach. Plus EU regulators, among others, are backing Matrix bigtime as an interoperability standard for RTC.
So literally none of the 4 vectors @pluralistic gives for enshittification are present.
