dctrud<p>The more I get into it with the kids, the more I'm realising that the 'train set' part of the <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a> market really has all but vanished, for new models anyway?</p><p>It's a bit odd that in order to find things robust enough for an 8 year old to play with, and affordable enough... I'm looking at much the same locos and coaches I was looking at as a kid.</p><p>What will there be for children when all the affordable 80s / 90s Lima etc. locos on ebay are too far gone? 😬</p>
dctrud<p>Post came while i was eating lunch… now, will the kids be as excited as I was? Heh.</p><p>Even these cheap, used, 2000s vintage models seem more detailed than the 80s / 90s ones I had as a kid. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
Fedi.Video<p>If you enjoy model railways or gardens, you might want to follow Simon Wood's PeerTube account which features model railways built in gardens:</p><p>➡️ <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://peertube.tv/accounts/simonwood" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>simonwood</span></a></span> </p><p>If the videos haven't federated to your server yet, you can browse them all at <a href="https://peertube.tv/a/simonwood/videos" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">peertube.tv/a/simonwood/videos</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>I'd especially recommend this video: <a href="https://peertube.tv/w/aHpxipGkV9sWiw8cu6Q4FL" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">peertube.tv/w/aHpxipGkV9sWiw8c</span><span class="invisible">u6Q4FL</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.growyourown.services/tags/FeaturedPeerTube" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FeaturedPeerTube</span></a> <a href="https://social.growyourown.services/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a> <a href="https://social.growyourown.services/tags/ModelTrains" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelTrains</span></a> <a href="https://social.growyourown.services/tags/Railways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Railways</span></a> <a href="https://social.growyourown.services/tags/Trains" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trains</span></a> <a href="https://social.growyourown.services/tags/PeerTube" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PeerTube</span></a> <a href="https://social.growyourown.services/tags/PeerTubers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PeerTubers</span></a></p>
Dan Summers<p>So, the locomotives are probably fine, and once I've unhacked the DCC bus under the layout and run a proper, soldered connection from the command station to the track, the track should be fine too. I'll see if I can get that done this weekend and maybe shoot a short video of the locos running with sound.</p><p>I totally failed to spot this problem - familiarity, I guess. The worst part is I have a PhD in embedded networking. Please laugh with me, at me :D </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
Dan Summers<p>I recently picked up a couple of DCC-sound-equipped model railway locomotives, and put them on my layout for a test run. They were both very choppy, lost comms often, it was like the track was dirty, but I'd cleaned it pretty thoroughly and it didn't seem to be getting better.</p><p>My brother's in town, and he took a look while we played around with them. Turns out, when I built the temporary comms bus for this layout years ago, I used crocodile clips to connect some of the wires <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/modelrailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>modelrailways</span></a></p>
Jim Easterbrook<p>Just started my first ever 3D print. (Machine arrived on Saturday.) Didn't bother with the supplied test file, went straight to my magnetic NEM coupler design.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/3DPrinting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>3DPrinting</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
Phil Haigh<p>I have been working on wiring up my power districts and block detection *excitement intensifies* <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/OOScale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OOScale</span></a></p>
Phil Haigh<p>Weekend model railway progress <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
Phil Haigh<p>Time for a model railway update. </p><p>So I need extensive 12v and to a lesser extent 16v and 5v power all around the layout - here’s my solution.</p><p>A small form factor PC case, a pair of Meanwell PSUs for 5v and 12v, and an adjustable PSU for 16v (that’s for the Kadee uncouplers).</p><p>Mains power comes into one set of terminals and is split three ways. An Earth goes to the chassis. I’ve got good quality 24/0.7 from the power supplies to another set of terminals.</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/PowerSupply" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PowerSupply</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Meanwell" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Meanwell</span></a></p>

𝔸𝕟𝕔𝕚𝕖𝕟𝕥 𝕊𝕠𝕦𝕟𝕕𝕤 🔉<p>End of an era (bit sad in a way), but also the start of new adventures. Transferring efforts to the garden railway now</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
Phil Haigh<p>First rough fit of the three baseboards for the branch line station. Have had to move some legs around to clear the helix underneath, and a gap in the back corner. As I’m resting up with a cold - so no computer work for me today - that’s it for now. <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/OOScale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OOScale</span></a></p>
Phil Haigh<p>Built six baseboards in the last 24 hours, next step is to clear space on and around the already installed baseboards so that I can trial fit these new boards, then take them down and start phase 2 of track laying. <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
CheekyMcB<p>One of the model railway layouts I saw near the end of my visit to Perth Model Railway Show had a super detailed allotment which I really loved.</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
CheekyMcB<p>There was quite an assortment of layouts and models at the Perth Model Railway Show.</p><p>The miniature cyclists were tempting.</p><p>There was also a set of Scouts. They depicted UK Scouts from the era they wore berets. I didn’t like them enough to buy the set, but was tempted.</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/ScoutingUK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScoutingUK</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
CheekyMcB<p>Had a wander around the Perth Model Railway Show.</p><p>Never been to a show like that, despite it being a regular one here. I’ve been to see smaller shows and displays. Fascinating. And the skill and effort is admirable.</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Scotland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Scotland</span></a></p>

Phil Haigh<p>I didn’t take many pictures at the Exeter show, mainly because even at 11:00 there were a lot of people milling around. My favourite was “Southgate Park”, a fictitious South East Railways scene in South West London (near Kew to be exact!) <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
