John Arnold<p>_The Evening Post_, 14 April 1925:<br> BY RAIL AND BOAT<br> EASTER TRAVELLING<br> HOLIDAYS AND MATRIMONY<br> Railway travelling this <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Easter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Easter</span></a> has been on about the average of last Easter, a “Post” reporter was informed to-day, in spite of the fact that children have been debarred from moving about the Dominion. The new <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/booking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>booking</span></a> arrangements, which make it possible to reserve seats for long distance journeys fourteen days before the journey is to be undertaken, have worked very satisfactorily at the Central Booking Office, for whereas it has always been necessary previously to form intending passengers into queues—very impatient queues at that—on the last two or three days prior to the holidays, this Easter’s bookings have been spread out over the best part of the fortnight available, and at no time has there been any great rush of business, with its consequent waste of time to those in the queue and inevitable irritation and dissatisfaction.<br> Long distance trips appear to have been popular this Easter, and heavy and full trains have run between Wellington and Auckland…<br><a href="https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19250414.2.64" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/news</span><span class="invisible">papers/EP19250414.2.64</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OnThisDay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OnThisDay</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OTD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OTD</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/PapersPast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PapersPast</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Railways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Railways</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Queueing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Queueing</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Holidays" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Holidays</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Travel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Travel</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Wellington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wellington</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/NewZealand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NewZealand</span></a></p>
IFR (she/her)<p>Someone asked me this afternoon “Is this the line for the cable car?”</p><p>I replied “I’m not sure. I’m <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/British" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>British</span></a>, I just saw a queue so stood in it.”<br> <br>The person asking just looked confused, but a lady two spots down from her overheard and burst out laughing, before giving me a big grin. </p><p>It was indeed the cable car queue, as I explained a moment later to the person who had asked, once I’d finished amusing myself. </p><p>Well I thought it was funny at least! And quick, I think you’ll find. 😁</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/FunnyInMyOwnMindAnyway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FunnyInMyOwnMindAnyway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/queueing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>queueing</span></a></p>
Take Off, Eh? 🇨🇦<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.xyz/@johnonolan" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>johnonolan</span></a></span><span> Are you grouping by domain and sending to it's shared inbox instead of individually to each subscriber's inbox? That would be an early win. <br><br>Then also having a delivery queue that limits the number of outbound connections at a time would also lessen the need to scale up to so many servers for one post to 5K subscribers. Look also to bulk email implementations for inspiration, which have a normal queue, then any that are stuck get moved to a separate try-later queue with it's own separate sending threads, and some back-off-on-error algo.<br><br>7.1.3 Shared Inbox Delivery<br></span><a href="https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/</a><span><br><br></span><a href="https://farticle.cloud/tags/sysadmin" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#sysadmin</a><span> </span><a href="https://farticle.cloud/tags/activitypub" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#activitypub</a><span> </span><a href="https://farticle.cloud/tags/thunderingherd" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#thunderingherd</a><span> </span><a href="https://farticle.cloud/tags/queueing" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#queueing</a></p>
