Franklin López<p>OK I swear this is the last post I’ll make about the Oka Crisis this year… but it’s important to remember.</p><p>Alanis Obomsawin’s Kanehsatà:ke: 270 Years of Resistance didn’t just blow my mind — it shaped the way I approach filmmaking. It showed me that a film could be more than a record — it could be a weapon. A document of resistance that outlives the moment and keeps feeding the fire.</p><p>I wrote up some thoughts about that, and shared a few pieces I’ve made over the years about the so-called Oka Crisis — clips with Clifton Nicholas, Gord Hill and Ellen Gabriel.</p><p>Check it out here:<br>👉 <a href="https://amplifierfilms.ca/reflections-on-resistance-35-years-since-the-siege-of-kanehsatake" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">amplifierfilms.ca/reflections-</span><span class="invisible">on-resistance-35-years-since-the-siege-of-kanehsatake</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Kanehsatake" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kanehsatake</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/OkaCrisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OkaCrisis</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/AlanisObomsawin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AlanisObomsawin</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LandBack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LandBack</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WarriorFlag" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WarriorFlag</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/subMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>subMedia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/AmplifierFilms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmplifierFilms</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ResistanceLives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResistanceLives</span></a></p>
Franklin López<p>35 years ago, Mohawks at Kanehsatà:ke stood their fuckin’ ground against cops, soldiers, and colonial bullshit. Back in the day, I chopped it up with legendary comic artist and militant Indigenous historian Gord Hill to break down the Oka Crisis in under 5 minutes. This was from my old show It's the End of the World as We Know It and I Feel Fine for <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://kolektiva.social/@subMedia" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>subMedia</span></a></span> . Franklin López<p>35 years ago, the colonial state laid siege to the Mohawk community of Kanehsatà:ke. Tanks, guns, and lies were deployed against land defenders holding sacred ground. That summer became a spark — not just for Indigenous resistance here, but for every struggle against settler colonialism.</p><p>This is the first in a series of drops marking that anniversary.<br>Narrated by my homie Clifton Ariwakehte Nicholas, who was there, behind the lines, holding it down. In this one, he breaks down the story of the Warrior Flag — how it went from the Pines to Standing Rock, to Palestine, to anywhere people rise up for their land and dignity.</p><p>The Siege of Kanehsatà:ke wasn’t the end.<br>It was the warning.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Kanehsatake" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kanehsatake</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Oka35" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Oka35</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WarriorFlag" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WarriorFlag</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LegacyOfDefiance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LegacyOfDefiance</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/IndigenousResistance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IndigenousResistance</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LandBack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LandBack</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/subMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>subMedia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Unceded" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Unceded</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NoJusticeOnStolenLand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NoJusticeOnStolenLand</span></a></p>

Franklin López<p>Back in 2006, millions of immigrants across the so-called U.S. walked off the job and into the streets for May Day — in what became the biggest mass strike in modern U.S. history. Bob Mottram ✅<p>And it's not just <a href="https://epicyon.libreserver.org/tags/submedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span>#</span><span>submedia</span></a>. If you're doing any vaguely left wing or anarcho thing, no matter how timid - cute doggos on the picket line, or whatever - then it is likely that your account on some Sillycon Valley website may just stop working one day. If they bother to give any reason at all it will be something technocratic, but the real reason will be that your values don't align with those of the site owner.<br><br>So it is important to develop independent media without any oligarchs gatekeeping it. And this does mean running independent servers and wotnot. Yes, you can complain bitterly and say the cloud is easier and respects your limited free time, or whatever, but this is just the brutal reality of it. Building your systems on oligarchic infrastructure is building a house on sand.</p>
