Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>"Taking Sunflower to Teacher," Winslow Homer, 1875.</p><p>Homer painted this soon after the Civil War. While the evident paternalism is kinda cringe, at the same time it does salute the importance of education. The butterfly seems to indicate the power of transformation. Arguments over the meaning range from a depiction of Darwinian survival, to a sort of self-portrait, with Homer as the fox and the crows representing negative forces in his life.</p><p>From the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. A remarkable exhibition. </p><p>I had not encountered Homer's work before and was struck by his powerful depiction of <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/narrative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>narrative</span></a>. The attitude of characters in his work say so much. I love the way Homer captures the light in his paintings, and the power and beauty of the sea. </p><p>There were so many wonderful pieces, but my favourite were Driftwood (1908) and The Cotton Pickers (1876)</p>

His paintings often investigate the relationship between humans and the <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/NaturalWorld" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NaturalWorld</span></a>. In the light of the <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ClimateEmergency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateEmergency</span></a>, they are perhaps more relevant than ever.
