There’s no place I’d rather be.
Connecting with residents at their doorsteps here in Regina Wascana has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. If I am fortunate enough to be elected on Monday, one of my goals is to personally knock on every door in the constituency. Nothing can replace looking someone in the eye, listening to their concerns, and hearing their hopes for our community.

One #random occurrence about the #tension between the US and Canada that has popped up locally...

There are (and have been for a few months) billboards around my city announcing United Airlines' new direct flights between #Regina (#YQR) and #Denver (#DEN). The billboards announce that flights start May 15. This has almost certainly been in the planning stages for at least a year; it takes time to negotiate with #airport authorities, obtain clearance from a foreign government, figure out how to schedule planes and crews and ground services without screwing up any existing routes, and on and on.

This is a big deal for my city; it's a small city, with lousy connectivity to, well, everywhere. You pretty much have to connect to #flights in Calgary or other bigger cities to get anywhere by #plane from here. Direct flights from Regina to USA destinations come and go over time as airlines try it, abandon it, rinse and repeat with a different airline.

And in the last couple of months, because of Orange Donny's decision to light #Canadian goodwill for the #USA on fire while dancing naked in the glow [1], air travel numbers from #Canada to the USA are down ... 70% from a year ago, at last report.

I don't think there is any air route which can be operated #profitably at 30% #occupancy.

I'm guessing those direct flights are not going to stick around long this time, either.

[1] I probably should have bought stock in a brain #bleach company before saying this.

Moose Jaw famously has *swans* in a creek in a park in the middle of town. I don't think I ever saw a pelican in Moose Jaw, but I could be wrong. I went to school there.

By the way, swans look great and peaceful and majestic and all, but they are Not To Be Trifled With at the best of times. They're up there with Canada geese.

At 7pm last night, I looked out my window and was pleasantly surprised to note that the sky wasn't black, but instead had a hint of darkest blue to it. Days are getting noticeably longer, and after a dark, cold winter, that's always welcome in the prairies.

Then this morning I looked at the weather forecast - and the daily highs for the whole week are at the freezing point or above! Not a negative sign to be seen. That's a nice surprise, too. Of course, weather forecasts are a real crapshoot more than a couple of days out, here...

Yup, 'tis chilly in SK this morning.

One of my favourite stories to tell folks from warmer climes is when they landed one of the rovers on Mars, the news stories about it were full of "OMG, the temperature on Mars is -42C!".

And it was -44C here that day. "Officially colder than Mars!"

It was -25C this afternoon in the Queen City. But there was hardly any wind, and it felt comparatively nice, especially in the sun, versus the last few days.

I saw people driving around with their windows down. It definitely is all relative...

This time, everyone's in motion. Two chasers, two chase-ees, and the remaining two just pulling back a bit because of the excitement.

I like the one at right of frame center, chasing the one headed up the snowbank. Back feet in the air, having just pushed off in a jump, cotton tail flying straight back...

TIL the first commercial film to use a (single strip) colour negative film (Eastmancolor) was *Royal Journey*, which has some astounding 1951 footage of a royal visit. Regina is completely unrecognizable along Rose Street, aside from the station at the end of it. Overhead footage of Edmonton and Winnipeg also eye-opening. #yqr #yeg #ywg nfb.ca/film/royal_journey/

Here in the middle of the #Canadian #prairies (#Regina, #SK), it was theoretically warmish out today -- only -15C, which is not bad at all for January. This is the time of year when we normally get some of our coldest weather -- occasional days where the mercury dips to -40C, where -35C is not that unusual, and where you might get a week where it never gets above -30C.

But it was *freezing* today. -15C is okay, but 80% relative humidity is not. People joke about our winters being "... but it's a dry cold!", but it really does make a difference. -15C with 80% humidity chills you to the bone in a way that a dry -30C just doesn't. Dressed properly, you can be comfortable all day long in the latter.

Hope we don't have too much more of this humidity in the forecast...
