clacke: exhausted pixie dream boy 🇸🇪🇭🇰💙💛<p>There's a natural variation in ozone in the atmosphere, but CFCs and other substances were reducing ozone levels and expanding the seasonal ozone holes over the poles. The problem was real and it was getting worse, because CFCs were produced for a reason: It was really useful and cost-effective stuff.</p><p>Banning ozone-depleting substances for use as coolants, fire supressants, aerosol propellants and other applications was very successful, and after four decades we are now more than halfway to recovering to natural ozone levels.</p><p>A few years ago there was briefly some illegal production of CFCs, which halted the recovery, but it was tracked down and halted, and we are back on track.</p><p><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/missions/aura/nasa-study-first-direct-proof-of-ozone-hole-recovery-due-to-chemicals-ban/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">nasa.gov/missions/aura/nasa-st…</a></p><p><a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-56014092" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">bbc.com/news/science-environme…</a></p><p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_depletion" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_de…</a></p><p><a href="https://libranet.de/search?tag=OzoneLayer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OzoneLayer</span></a> <a href="https://libranet.de/search?tag=OzoneDepletion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OzoneDepletion</span></a><br><a href="https://libranet.de/search?tag=OzoneDepletingSubstances" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OzoneDepletingSubstances</span></a> <a href="https://libranet.de/search?tag=ODSes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ODSes</span></a><br><a href="https://libranet.de/search?tag=chlorofluorocarbons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>chlorofluorocarbons</span></a> <a href="https://libranet.de/search?tag=CFCs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CFCs</span></a></p>
David Hembrow<p>A blog post about buying a new appliance. I don't do this often. In general I try to repair things instead of buying new. But in this case the old refrigerator (which was in our home when we moved here 17 years ago) was using an absurd amount of electricity. Our consumption will be about 600 kWh a year lower due to replacing an old fridge and an old freezer with a new A-rated appliance.<br><a href="https://davidhembrow.blogspot.com/2024/06/saving-energy-with-new-appliances.html" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">davidhembrow.blogspot.com/2024</span><span class="invisible">/06/saving-energy-with-new-appliances.html</span></a><br><a href="https://todon.eu/tags/savingenergy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>savingenergy</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/energyefficiency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>energyefficiency</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/refrigerator" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>refrigerator</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/cfcs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cfcs</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/kitchen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kitchen</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/kitchenrenovation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kitchenrenovation</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/savingmoney" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>savingmoney</span></a></p>

David Ho<p>Humans have never removed an <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/environmental" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>environmental</span></a> pollutant on a regional or global scale that matters.</p><p>Our solution to environmental pollution has always been to reduce the pollutant at the source (e.g., <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/CFCs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CFCs</span></a> for stratospheric <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/ozone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ozone</span></a>, SO₂ for acid rain, SOₓ, NOₓ, VOCs, etc. for urban air <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/pollution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>pollution</span></a>) and then let nature heal. </p><p>The solution to <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/CO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CO</span></a>₂ pollution might be the same. We have to prepare for the possibility that CO₂ removal (<a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/CDR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CDR</span></a>) doesn't work and <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/reduce" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>reduce</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/fossil" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fossil</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/fuel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fuel</span></a> CO₂ <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/emissions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>emissions</span></a> ASAP.</p>
