Prompt 5: Complementary
-> Rufous-Crested Coquette

Hi, I hate drawing hummingbirds, that's why I usually choose to draw at least one during art challenges, to, well, challenge myself! Also, this guy's name sounds a bit like "croquette" and I like croquettes, so that's that.

So, what does "complementory" mean anyway? Complementary colours, also called "opposite colours" are pairs of colours where the two cancel each other out by producing a greyscale colour.

Sounds complicated? Here's how I learned about complementary colours in 5th grade or so:
Complementary colours are pairs of primary colours (blue, red, yellow) where one of the primary colours is paired with a mix of the other two. So that leaves us with:
Red -> Green
Blue -> Orange
Yellow -> Purple

So I went for red-green with the birb and yellow-purple with the background (a type of flower these birbs like to snack).

The rufous-crested coquette is t i n y and very lightweight, even for a hummingbird. That's why they stand no chance against other birbs when fighting for food, so they prefer to live in greater heights or at the outer edges of forests where there are fewer birbs to compete against.

FUN FACT
To this day, no rufous-crested coquette has ever been observed to actually lay an egg, which, fair, give them some privacy, man.
