#digitization

1 post1 participant0 posts today

After visiting my 95 year old grandma, I've come into possession of decades of Vogue and Good Housekeeping magazines, from the 60s onward.

Flipping through these is a treasure trove of fashions and styles, dressmaking guides, cultural writing, etc.

Anyone got pointers on how best to quickly digitize magazines for Internet Archive? Each issue is almost 200 pages, and there's got to be 30 or 40 issues here. #InternetArchive #Digitization #Vogue

#Digitization #EU - DNS4EU for Public - "The goal of DNS4EU is to ensure the digital sovereignty of the EU by providing a private, safe, and independent European DNS resolver. The DNS4EU initiative aligns with the EU's strategic goal of enhancing its digital autonomy by providing an alternative to the existing public DNS services provided by non-european entities. DNS4EU aims to enhance the European Union's control over its digital infrastructure and data, reducing European reliance on foreign DNS providers and thereby supporting the digital sovereignty of European organizations and citizens." - DNS4EU is an initiative by the European Commission joindns4.eu/for-public

Does anyone have recommendations for a #photo #digitization service?

I have a bunch of family photos spanning the last century (a couple on glass/silver plate). Neither my sibling nor I have the time or expertise to scan them individually and we would much rather pay someone to do it right the first time.

Erittäin kiinnostava juttu julkisista arkistoista, digitaalisen tiedon säilyvyydestä/säilymättömyydestä ja - tietenkin - datakeskuksista.
/ A very interesting read on public records, the (im)permanence of digital knowledge and - of course - data centres.

The DialIreland's Memory Machines — The DialData centers have proliferated across the country, at great cost.

My read of the Belgian gov agreement only focusing on #opendata and #digitization:
1. Further investments promised on Linked Open Data 🥰
2. A chief data officer at BOSA will need to set a data governance and work on interoperability
3. Railway agencies such as NMBS/SNCB are urged to open up more data
4. The Health Data Space is going to be further developed
5. All gov services to be digitized by 2030
6. Better control over your data

I like it: realistic and ambitious

Questions for the hive mind:

We know (or can safely assume) that #AI companies are taking advantage of previously digitized #PublicDomain #OpenAccess texts in order to train their AI tools.

But are any AI companies undertaking new public-domain digitization projects for the purpose of training their AI tools?

If so, do those newly digitized texts ever become #OA? Or are they kept offline for internal use, perhaps to avoid the extra expense of hosting or to avoid helping rival companies?

Was happy to come across someone in the wild sharing this great article by my old boss Tara Robertson. I still think about it when I hear idealistic talk about digitising materials by marginalised people to save them. Things can be more complicated.

"I will look at the digitization of On Our Backs (OOB), a lesbian porn magazine that ran from 1984–2004, as a case study of where digitization and publishing this content online is inappropriate."

@lproven @theregister as much as I love the #freedom and #autonomy of #linux it's definitely a #purest #technically #adept approach to self #digitization

The majority of people I've worked with want nothing to do with knowing how anything works. They just want their computer to auto-load all their bents like #magic , be able to access anything on the #Network without getting permission and install any #app on their #device they choose.

#Government , #libraries especially, need to untether from #broZone #architecture and do things for themselves again.

I'm not a #statistician and only have #anecdotal #evidence to go by, but I don't see a whole lotta folks doing, or even wanting, to do things themselves. Let alone, pick up the #skills required to do so.

The worst part, the people actually willing and able to help, can't afford to, because it doesn't #pay well, enough.

So, we all have to figure out a way to fix "that" first. But, that would require everyone believing doing #work themselves is better for them and the #Earth in the long run rather than #automating each and every #human #interaction out of #existence
