Hey, #Gnome folks, there's an extension that I used to have but lost in a reinstall that would restore your open applications to the workspaces they were in when you shut down your computer. Does anyone recall what that was? Was it a function of another extension? I really miss it, so if you can remind me, I'd be grateful.

Tonight the mood struck me so I took the plunge and installed #PaperlessNGX <docs.paperless-ngx.com/> on my primary home #Linux box.
It's an open-source document management system that transforms paper documents into a searchable online archive. More digital, less paper!
If it works as advertised I hope to greatly decrease the amount of paper I'm shoving into our file cabinet.
I'll probably blog about my experience after I've been using it for a while.
Seven documents scanned so far!

Hey Linux people: is there a good GUI app for making bootable Linux USB drives so I don't have to use the dd command? Ideally something available on most distributions. #linux #foss

EDIT: Should have clarified, not Belana Etcher, it has weird privacy stuff.

Google to Pay Texas $1.4 Billion to End Privacy Cases

Users who rely on Google’s Android ecosystem—phones, tablets, search engines, browsers—are exposed to monitoring, tracking, and data harvesting by design, not by accident.

Unlike Google and Android-based platforms, Purism’s #Librem5 smartphone and #PureOS operating system are built for privacy, security, and user freedom.

Purism · Google to Pay Texas $1.4 Billion to End Privacy Cases – PurismPurism makes premium phones, laptops, mini PCs and servers running free software on PureOS. Purism products respect people's privacy and freedom while protecting their security.

I do think the distinction matters! 'Twas amazing innovation — way ahead of its time — for a #FOSS project to write a Constitution & develop separation of powers & referendum processes & “all the things” a Republic needs: no one did that for FOSS before & probably after.

It's why Debian has lasted so long & survived (& now even thrives after) the crisis of attempted take-over by a determined billionaire.

IMO, @debian proved large FOSS projects need a Republic for the long term.

Dear, artists and photographers who have Instagram accounts with lots of really amazing things.

Please move to a new platform so those of us with a conscience and a moral compass can enjoy your work.

Sincerely, Mark and lots of other people who enjoy really amazing things.

I agree w/ @phloggen that many #FOSS projects are democracies. Governing in a true democracy is hard because every decision of governance requires a vote. @debian was innovative (especially for the time — early 1990s) b/c they wrote a Constitution & created a republic so elected executives & committees could make day-to-day decisions that most DDs were too busy to focus on.

Similar problems come up in consent anarchy (— which is probably the most common structure for #FOSS projects).

@cwebber Sorry, too busy doing #FOSS work to listen to music. 😛

It'll have to wait until I have to clean the kitchen next or am driving while *not* on a conference call.

About the only time I get for music are those.

I fondly remember #DebConf 15 – now ten years ago – that @katyswain mentioned.

@debian has indeed changed my life. It remains the only #FOSS project that's an international constitutional republic. It's a community that predates my involvement in FOSS. It's made up by people who believe in the vision of software rights that I have. &, yes, they're my friends. How could such people not be?

Also, @noodles, I promise *someday* I'll finish my DD application!

Software Freedom ConservancySummary of My DebConf 15 KeynoteIn my keynote I outlined the advantages of copyright aggregation for community-oriented projects like Debian. Not only does copyright aggregation assure that a well-equipped organization can enforce copyleft licenses, but also the organization can handle future relicensing requests and cooperate with other Free Software communities who need license exceptions. Holding copyright is a privilege, but it is also a burden, since copyright gives the copyright holder excessive power. In the Free Software community, we mitigate that power by choosing a Free Software license (as I explained in the essay that I cowrote with RMS in 2001). But copyright grants yet another power — which ultimately becomes an obligation. The copyright holder must, on behalf of users, ensure compliance with copyleft so that the users' software freedom is always respected. Conservancy can now help Debian with that arduous task.
