This Is My Glasgow<p>Instead, they are likely present simply to maintain the symmetry of the building, and either hide internal features, such as chimney flues, or were used to save the cost of adding real windows, as glass would still have been quite costly at the time as each pane would have had to be hand-made.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/kingspark" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kingspark</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/windowtax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>windowtax</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecturephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecturephotography</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The Georgian neo-Classical Aikenhead House in King's Park in Glasgow. If you look carefully at the windows at the left hand end, you'll see they're actually fake, with the mullions and transoms painted on stone. This wing was added in 1823, some 75 years after the introduction of a window tax in Scotland, so it's unlikely they were originally designed as functional windows that were then sealed up. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/kingspark" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kingspark</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/windowtax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>windowtax</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecturephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecturephotography</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>Despite its reputation for being a bit rainy at times, Scotland has more historic sundials than anywhere else in the world, mostly dating from the 17th and 18th Centuries. There is even a type, known as an obelisk sundial, which is unique to Scotland. Many, like this one, have multiple dials and gnomons (the bit which casts the shadow used to tell the time), and were probably designed more to be decorative than functional.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/kingspark" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kingspark</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/sundial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sundial</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/scottishsundials" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>scottishsundials</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/sculpture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sculpture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/publicart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>publicart</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>It was constructed for John Gordon, a prominent Glasgow merchant who made his wealth by importing sugar from the slave plantations of Jamaica before diversifying into cotton manufacture.
