This Is My GlasgowThe Georgian neo-Classical Aikenhead House in King's Park in Glasgow. If you look carefully at the windows at the left hand end, you'll see they're actually fake, with the mullions and transoms painted on stone. This wing was added in 1823, some 75 years after the introduction of a window tax in Scotland, so it's unlikely they were originally designed as functional windows that were then sealed up. This Is My GlasgowDespite its reputation for being a bit rainy at times, Scotland has more historic sundials than anywhere else in the world, mostly dating from the 17th and 18th Centuries. There is even a type, known as an obelisk sundial, which is unique to Scotland. This Is My GlasgowIt was constructed for John Gordon, a prominent Glasgow merchant who made his wealth by importing sugar from the slave plantations of Jamaica before diversifying into cotton manufacture. He was also the first chairman of a pro-slavery lobbying group called the Glasgow West India Association. The house and the surrounding land was acquired by the city in 1930 after the death of Gordon's grandson in 1929.
