The cover features an illustration of the amazon logo with teeth in its smile dripping red. The second photo shows headlines about amazon's labor crimes. The third photo shows pages explaining tips for reading the zine including not using the phrase "no ethical consumption under capitalism" to hide behind. It also includes a list of alternatives to amazon's website including ebay, stores' actual websites, small artists, and secondhand shopping apps. The text is written in gel pen of various colors, and a doodle of a yellow shopping basket is at the bottom. The fourth photo shows pages that list amazon offshoot alternatives such as Storygraph instead of goodreads, youtube instead of twitch, libby and hoopla instead of audible, and antennapod or RSS radio for podcasts. Nigel<p>Recently installed a free library app on phone called Libby. Thought I would try something a little different for my first 'borrow' and chose the original book of Planet of the Apes. Written by Pierre Boulle, the 1963 novel La Planète des singes. Obviously the version in English for me! 🙄 It's already very different from any of the film/TV versions and I have high hopes. Seems to have much more of a Jules Verne/HG Wells feel to it, although not that far into it, no apes yet!<br><a href="https://musicians.today/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/libby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>libby</span></a></p>
Robert Kingett<p>Other audiobook readers, this happened to me on 3 different apps now so I wanted to alert others of this. As I usually do, I look up what new books my favorite narrators have narrated. Now, when I click on the narrator name, I am treated with audiobooks with their AI clone instead of their human narration. I already checked. That narrator is alive and still is recording audiobooks. Always listen to audiobooks before you make a purchase/borrow. Even now, it is incredibly obvious which ones are AI and which are narrated by the original human. This has happened to me on Hoopla, Libby, and on Audible so far. I know the audiobook narrator I looked up works for Recorded Books. It would not surprise me if they claim that they will never produce AI narrated audiobooks and then turn around and exploit their narrators without them knowing about it.</p><p>I took the liberty of emailing the narrator about this. This was his reply.</p><p>Robert,</p><p>Thank you very much for alerting me about the clone of my voice. As a Black narrator, this deeply troubles me, especially since I did not make this clone nor did I authorize it's creation. I will be extra vigilant as to what publishers I work with in the future and will make my displeasure very clear. I cannot thank you enough for your advocacy and for alerting me. iolaire<p>Cutting off funding to the Institute of Museum and Library Services is a personal issue for me. I&amp;#39;m an avid reader, reading 50-60 books yearly. All my <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>reading</span></a> is on the iPhone Kindle app from the three closest libraries via the <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/Libby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Libby</span></a> app. That app has made it very easy to manage my holds and loans; overall, it&amp;#39;s a great experience. Now that cutting is being cut, I learned it was a project of the federal government via the Institute of Museum and Library Services.</p>

Looks like choices are very limited nowadays, at least for the major publishers.
