Jon :vinyl:<p>Well, I had an anxiety dream last night about this. </p><p>I made a salad out of shattered fragments of shellac and my wife was eating it and saying how much it tasted like vinyl. All the time I was worrying what was actually in shellac and whether or not it would kill her. </p><p>Hmmm. </p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/shellac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>shellac</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/78s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>78s</span></a></p>
Jon :vinyl:<p>Just sold 6 x 78rpm shellac jazz records and now I have the ‘packing and shipping shellac’ anxiety. Are there enough stiffeners and bubble wrap in the world? <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/shellac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>shellac</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/78s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>78s</span></a></p>
Jon :vinyl:<p>Annoyingly I can’t find the hose adapter anywhere. Jon :vinyl:<p>I was wondering where this was! I got this old KAB EV-1 years ago, used to use it all the time but as it needed an external vacuum hooked up, it took up too much room. I am resurrecting it specifically for 78rpm shellac discs. <br><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/vinyl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vinyl</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/shellac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>shellac</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/78rpm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>78rpm</span></a></p>

Eric supports DEI!<p>Vegan warning: I just bought a big, expensive bag of Tierra Farm organic chocolate covered almonds and I neglected to check the ingredients. Tierra Farm coats their confections with shellac made from the secretions of the female lac beetle in a process that crushes the beetles. Fran 🇦🇷<p>I read that you can extend the shelf life by lowering the temperature and humidity the flakes are exposed to, so the plan was to seal portions with silica gel in vacuum-sealed packs, store the packets in an airtight glass jar, and store the jar in the refrigerator.</p><p>Two years have passed and the flakes from that batch still completely dissolve in alcohol in just two hours, as if they were freshly harvested 🥳.</p><p>🧵 <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/PortuariaLamp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PortuariaLamp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/shellac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>shellac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a></p>
Fran 🇦🇷<p>Shellac is sold in flakes to dissolve or in a ready-made solution with alcohol. In both cases it has a limited storage time of one to two years. In the case of flakes, what happens is that it polymerizes and then no longer dissolves in alcohol.</p><p>It already happened to me with a batch of flakes that were left unused for two years. With the next batch I bought, I set out to prevent the same thing from happening to me again.</p><p>🧵 <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/PortuariaLamp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PortuariaLamp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/shellac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>shellac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a></p>
Fran 🇦🇷<p>Shellac is my favorite finish for wood. Some reasons for this are:</p><p>- It is of biological origin, since it is obtained from the secretion of an insect from Southeast Asia.</p><p>- It can be diluted in ethyl alcohol, a relatively safe solvent also of biological origin.</p><p>- It is not toxic, it is even an authorized food additive under code E904.</p><p>- Easy to apply and repair locally if it gets scratched.</p><p>- Biodegradable in reasonable times.</p><p>🧵 <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/PortuariaLamp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PortuariaLamp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/shellac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>shellac</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a></p>
