“Cueva de la Línea”

Cueva de la Línea is one of the most important caves in Los Haitises National Park, located in the area of Caño Preso, on the edge of an extensive mangrove swamp.

The cave has a length of about 600 meters and sunlight can be seen all the way through. In this cave there are more than 950 paintings still visible, although the cave must have contained many more, since there are many areas with evidence that the paintings were erased, mostly due to natural causes.

“Reminiscences of the Taino people”

Deep within the history of the Dominican Republic lies a rich tapestry of ancient civilization, centered around the vibrant culture of the Taino people. The Taino, also known as the Arawak, were the indigenous inhabitants of the island of Hispaniola long before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492.

Despite the devastating consequences of European colonization, the Taino legacy continues to shape the identity and cultural landscape of the Dominican Republic.

“Blue Egret in the mangrove”

The Blue Egret mainly frequents shallow inland wetlands: marshes, ponds, lakes, flooded meadows and rice paddies. But it can also be found in brackish or salty environments such as mangroves and sheltered mudflats along the coast.

The Blue Egret feeds mainly on aquatic arthropods, particularly crabs, which abound in the mangroves.

“Los Haitises National Park mangrove”

Despite the poor soil, frequent rainfall and high humidity have allowed the development of vegetation typical of the subtropical rainforest.

The park is an impressive vegetation maze of deep fjords that merge into mangrove and liana forests. The reserve boasts many precious varieties of tree, from cedar to mahogany and mangrove.

“Los Haitises National Park”

It's no coincidence that Los Haitises National Park has been dubbed the “Halong Bay of the Caribbean”. Located in the Bay of Samana, this little-known natural park is mainly discovered by sea, as it is very difficult to reach by road. It is made up of thick tropical forest, mangrove swamps and dozens of islets, some of which are covered in cactus.

One of the great attractions of this paradise is the largest mangrove area in the Caribbean, with species such as red mangrove and white mangrove. Cedar and mahogany trees, as well as orchids of various species, complete an extraordinary array of plants.

As for the fauna, you can't miss the huge number of birds that populate the national park, especially in Cayo de los Pájaros, a favorite haunt for species such as the gannet, pelican and parrot, among many others.

“Magnificent Frigatebirds”

The magnificent frigatebird is a seabird that occurs over tropical and subtropical waters off America.

“Magnificent Great Egret”

This elegant heron is completely white with its magnificent plumage, reminding lace.

The bill of the Great egret is sharp, long and yellow in color. The bird has long, black feet and legs. During the breeding season, the bill becomes a bit darker while the legs get lighter. This bird possesses a very long neck, exceeding the length of its body. The bird has a notable kink of its neck, curving the necks into a “S” shape when flying.

During the breeding season, these birds grow long, lacy shaped feathers known as “aigrettes”, stretching them in an impressive display.

“Western osprey in Dominican Republic”

The osprey is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range.

The osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. It is found on all continents except Antarctica.

The osprey has several adaptations that suit its piscivorous lifestyle. These include reversible outer toes, sharp spicules on the underside of the toes, closable nostrils to keep out water during dives, and backward-facing scales on the talons which act as barbs to help hold slippery fish, and dense plumage which is oily and prevent its feathers from getting wet.

“Majestic Brown pelican”

With their broad wings and long beaks, brown pelicans are clumsy on land, but the largest pelicaniformes have a rare elegance in the air and a formidable efficiency when they dive to fish in the seas around the American continent.

On the coastline, brown pelicans frolic from dawn to dusk. Bathing birds, they spend most of the day catching their daily two kilos of fish. In disorderly squadrons, they play on wind currents, then swoop down from a height of 30 m on schools of sardines and anchovies. This species frequently follows fishing boats.

Their expandable gular pouch is tinged with red and green during courtship.

“Playa Carolina, Las Terrenas”

Playa Carolina is located in the seaside town of Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic.

Las Terrenas is a former fishing village turned small scale tourism hot-spot due to its postcard-perfect beaches and natural wonders.

Minus many of the large resorts that overwhelm beaches elsewhere on the island (and keep locals from visiting their own beaches).

“Sierra de Samaná hills”

The Cordillera Septentrional is a mountain range that runs parallel to the north coast of the Dominican Republic, with extensions to the northwest as Tortuga island in Haiti, and to the southeast through lowlands to where it rises as the Sierra de Samaná on the Samaná Peninsula.

The Sierra de Samaná stretches along the Samaná peninsula, over a length of 60 kilometers. The peninsula's highest points are: La Meseta at 650 meters, Las Cañitas at 546 meters and Pan de Azúcar at 493 meters.

This mountain range contains deposits of marble and lignite, but only the marble has been mined.

“The flowering of the carnations”

If you thought the flowers opened by themselves, you had no idea.

Eventually, you thought it was little fairies like Tinkerbell who took care of them. But that's in children's movies.

The reality is more pragmatic, there are specialized workers for that, simply.
