Twice now I've been caught wth a 135mm lens and an echidna at my feet. Managed to grab this pic before it came any closer - focus 'not ideal', best I could do in the circumstance without scaring it. (Once that happens, they dig in and you won't see their face for some time. Thankfully they have poor eyesight, so if you're quiet and still they likely won't notice you.)

@0xThylacine a friend of mine who works at Adelaide Zoo met their blind echidna recently. But of course that's far from the echidna's most powerful sense, and it thoroughly explored every gap in my friend's closed-toe sandals with its snout, which was quite a sensation — perhaps for both of them.
