A pair of neat #AppleTalk posters are up on Mercari, a shame they want $70 each(!!) for them

It is 100% a port/socket binding condition in Basilisk II. I cross-strapped the OS7 and OS8 instances on both devices to use alternating UDP ports 6066 and 6067. Now both instances on both machines can connect to the other with AppleTalk.
Finally joined the #globaltalk today! A gopher log entry is forthcoming, but this moment was many-fails-in-the-making… hard drives, power supplies, ink cartridges… Feels great to enjoy classic #AppleTalk networking with friends again. :) Happy #MARCHintosh, all!
Mind you, my main contribution in that era was one of the earliest "online" travel applications written for internal Apple use. I'd argue it's still easier to use than anything on the web. We basically fronted SABRE with a full Mac OS experience. #appletalk #globaltalk
With all the people playing with #appletalk and #globaltalk, I'm reminded of when I worked for Apple in the early 1990s, in the "pre IP" days when we ran a global AppleTalk network where you could mount a file server from Cupertino in London. Slowly.
It was a time.
Wow. I watch people having fun exploring #GlobalTalk and, as someone who had to work with #AppleTalk professionally for years, all I can think is, "Brrr… Too soon, man. Too soon."
"#AppleTalk is a local area network (LAN) that can tie up to 32 Macs or peripherals together... Few offices need to push the network to its limits, which is just as well, because all AppleTalk can realistically handle is between 8 and 10 nodes." #Free to a good home: A bunch of Digital Ocean Grouper wireless LocalTalk networking units. Three 100LT units with four batteries and AC adaptors. Includes manuals, warranty cards, and software on floppies.

I remember I used some utility that allowed sending short messages via AppleTalk. I think I would go to the chooser, select the other user, type a message, and it would appear as an alert dialog on the other Mac. I know it existed because I used it a lot to chat with my neighbour (we had a PhoneNet cable between our apartments). Does anyone remember the name of this thing? #GlobalTalk #AppleTalk #RetroApple
@loriemerson @w8emv @mediaarchaeologylab I'd probably have never found the #othernetworks tag on my own (like the elsewhere-mentioned #retronetworking tag), looking forward to falling down that rabbit hole!
I've not yet personally played with #appletalk beyond some scratchy memories as a user from long-enough-ago, but do recall some recent posts where people were playing with it -- and trying to run it over barbed wire or something? Not sure if that's the same group, but it looked fun.
Thanks!
Hi AppleTalk! Love this feed!
I also created an #Apple feed on @surf for those that have the beta. It’s called Apple Talk and you can find it at the following link if you have the app or by searching it.
You can contribute to it by using the hashtag, #AppleTalk.

I've finished writing up the guide for building QEMU version 9 on a Raspberry Pi 5 along with the scripts to enable bridged networking for AppleTalk over Ethernet. The guide covers both 68K and PPC Mac emulation.
Hope you find it useful!
Of the things I don't understand about #AppleTalk and/or #GlobalTalk the one that bugs me most is this:
I can see/visit/connect to other zones from my router and you all have visited/connected to my public share.
Why can none of my other Macs on the same network (22 bit mask fwiw) running System 7.5 (BlueSCSI WiFi) and Mac OS 8/9 (Ethernet) see zones at all? Not my zone, not y'all's zones.
You remember my super-quick proof-of-concept #HyperCard over #AppleTalk demo a week or so ago? https://bitbang.social/@billgoats/111863007152408773
Well! @ericsedge is going to be livestreaming making a two-player HyperCard network today at 3pm GMT / 10am EST.

:D
Can you make a multi-player game in #HyperCard? You sure can! With the magic of #appletalk
Join me live on YouTube this Saturday at 10 am Eastern.
#Suntember - In 1987, #SunMicrosystems, flush with the success of #NFS, bought Centram Systems West, co-developers of the #Appletalk Filing Protocol. They were renamed to #TOPS, and then to #Sitka, due to a trademark conflict with a paper forms company. Long thread about my involvement over at the dead bird site: https://twitter.com/aka_pugs/status/1241619297576710145
After a few tries I was able to fully print from Quark XPress to the ImageWriter II over #AppleTalk with the #AirTalk from the #PocketChip! It wasn’t quick but it worked!
After making some really sketchy repository changes and doing an incantation, I got some X11 sources installed and Mini VMac actually compiled without issue!
And look! It’s speaking AppleTalk (UDP) on my network!! Hahaha this is so weird to me. Should I print something to my AppleTalk ImageWriter II from my handheld?
