I remember I used some utility that allowed sending short messages via AppleTalk. I think I would go to the chooser, select the other user, type a message, and it would appear as an alert dialog on the other Mac. I know it existed because I used it a lot to chat with my neighbour (we had a PhoneNet cable between our apartments). Does anyone remember the name of this thing? #GlobalTalk #AppleTalk #RetroApple

@loriemerson @w8emv @mediaarchaeologylab I'd probably have never found the #othernetworks tag on my own (like the elsewhere-mentioned #retronetworking tag), looking forward to falling down that rabbit hole!

I've not yet personally played with #appletalk beyond some scratchy memories as a user from long-enough-ago, but do recall some recent posts where people were playing with it -- and trying to run it over barbed wire or something? Not sure if that's the same group, but it looked fun.

Thanks!

Of the things I don't understand about #AppleTalk and/or #GlobalTalk the one that bugs me most is this:

I can see/visit/connect to other zones from my router and you all have visited/connected to my public share.

Why can none of my other Macs on the same network (22 bit mask fwiw) running System 7.5 (BlueSCSI WiFi) and Mac OS 8/9 (Ethernet) see zones at all? Not my zone, not y'all's zones.
