The thing that most strikes me as I read these counterculture publications and analysis thereof is this idea that "The Internet" or "computers" will do a thing.

No.

The Internet will not dissolve monopolies or bureaucracy. The Internet is a tool. People can use that tool to do things, but it will be people that do the things.

#diymedia is important to me specifically because it is about putting people in the position to create media for themselves and their community. The Media won't save us, people will.

The videofreex and the folks behind TVTV and Guerilla Television... they failed in a lot of ways.

Today, they are remembered for their Art and not for their activism. The video they produced is suppressed, paywalled, inaccessible.

But the idea that participatory media, that #diymedia can be a force for political and social change? It's been proven again and again over the last 50 years.

But it raises some points I want to talk about, because the story isn't about links.net or Justin, or at least it isn't just about Justin and Links.net. It's also about publishing, participatory media, #diymedia, the potential transformative power of the internet, and what it means to be a human being who is Very Online.

And I want to talk about that.

So if you've been waiting on our official roku app to check out what #newellijaytelevision is all about, or you're hearing about it now for the first time and want to know more, please do check out what we've done so far.

Give us a review on the store, watch a bit of the live stream or one of our archives.

Now that this hurdle has been cleared, we should have a lot of new original material going up every few days.

#NewEllijayTV streams off a server in Bulgaria so ... It might not work well.

Ah well, it's #diymedia, and specifically #diyTV It doesn't have to work *well*, it just has to work.

RokuRokuRoku provides the simplest way to stream entertainment to your TV. On your terms. With thousands of available channels to choose from.

Hey! Do you make videos?

Especially short films, Television style videos, or Music programs, but really any kind of news or entertainment videos.

New Ellijay Television's Roku app is under review right now, and we're getting ready for our first big promotional push (I'm going to be on the radio. I might be interviewed on television.)

I'm looking for independent, values aligned, original video productions to add to our VOD catalog and our live stream rotation.

Later we'll release the whole thing in HD with a professional mix out of the soundboard, in color and with multiple cameras. You know, the way #diymedia can be made in the modern era.

We've got @djsundog on lights and cameras for that.

But that's later. Tonight we have a single room mic and a hardware video switcher and two tube cameras. This is independent media as it might have been made circa 1970.

I'm on the board of directors of a local arts organization, in spite of the fact that it's a massive sink on my time, and I get nothing out of it, because it means that I get to help local bands get access to their excellent theater.

I've been hand dubbing cassettes and CDs and making t-shirts for local bands, and losing money on it, for more than a decade.

Beyond the #DIYMedia stuff I'm always talking about, this is the stuff I care the most about in the world.

#AnalogRevolution is proud to present another wonderful sonic treat!

This time a release from Hurly Burly and the Volcanic Fallout!! This is one of my own bands, and by far the longest running group I have been in. I formed Hurly Burly and the Volcanic Fallout in high school with @CaptainUnderpants and Sean. We played around the Metro Atlanta area, always in some weird costumes.

Once we built a giant cake from cardboard. It had to have been close to 6 feet tall. We filled it with balloons and destroyed it in the crowd. The last show we played, circa 2013, we rented a generator and played our weird party-punk at an abandoned go-kart track.

It’s a weird band. The music is a sloppy pop-punk, and it’s a weird wave of nostalgia for me. Hurly Burly will be played on January 28th at one of our #AnalogRevolution shows.

Get yourself a hand-duped cassette or digital download today!

Also shoutout to my label partner, @ajroach42 for everything. Seriously, this guy is one of my dearest friends and helps make dreams happen.

We have a cartoon in the works (with a very rough and unfinished sneak preview here: mountaintown.video/w/fjQTytvN7 We'll be replacing the character models in the coming weeks, and I'm still learning how to animate)

Everything is built around #openmedia #diymedia, this is designed to be a thing you can sink your teeth in to, and become a part of.

To be or not to be? That is what's asked of me. And, more importantly, all of us. Fight. Fight for progress. Fight against the systems keeping us in place. Too tired to fight? The system is built that way on purpose. Take small steps, like #shopsmall to take even a few dollars out of corporate hands. Listen to, watch, and experience #DIYmedia and #DIYmusic to find free thoughts.

The ghouls and ghosts are dangerous but not the enemy. That title falls to the goons. The corporate goons brainwashed to keep the systems in place that oppress us. The systems that make us tired and complacent. The system that spoon feeds serotonin through corporate approved methods. They want you to feed the Mouse.

Hey friends! Analog Revolution, the label ran by myself and @ajroach42 has JUST released a new cassette!

Out on Bandcamp now, and streaming soon, is Corridors by Red Hot Empty. It's punk, it's fun, and you kinda need it in your collection, digitally or physically.

I mixed it, and I'm super happy with how everything turned out.

Anyway. Check it out.

When I talk about #diymedia and #diyTV, I'm revisiting these old conversations. I'm re-hashing decisions and designs and ideas from 50+ years ago.

More than that, really, but the 50ish years ago movement is what I'm studying at the moment. This playbook, this idea of co-opting available technology and using it to spread radical ideology, using it to educate, using it to build networks and power structures to rival and supplant those provided by corporations and/or the state, has existed for hundreds of years.

In the 1700s, it was a pamphlet. In the 1920s, it was a newspaper, in the 30s film, or a novel, or a comic book, or a radio broadcast.

We're just repeating patterns.

I need to write Zine articles. I need to make some tweaks to Red Hot Empty mixes. I need to finalize the track order for Hurly Burly and the Volcanic Fallout. I need to get the masters for Hurly Burly/New Clear Lawn Chairs to pressing. I need to get manufacturing going for Red Hot Empty. I need art for Burly Chairs. I have day job work. I need to do all of these things this week. Then I can focus on the Doctor Deathray release again
