#StandWithUkraine #FirstAid 🇺🇦🇺🇸

🚑 As an EMT-B, I know the lifesaving value of first aid bandages and hemostatic 🩸napkins. I just learned the first box I donated arrived with my trusted Ukrainian friends. I have sent these to friends in #Lviv, #Kyiv, #Odesa, and #Kharkiv, who will deliver them directly to the heroes on the frontline.

➡️Our collective efforts—from small donations to conversations—continue to make a real impact.

Just received a video from Oleg at Spravzhni Ukraine in #Kherson

✨He confirmed receipt of the tourniquets, #American flag, and handwritten card I sent from the U.S. These will be delivered directly to the frontline.

⛑️ I’ve volunteered with Spravzhni #Ukraine twice on the ground—and continue to support from the United States.

🎯Every act of solidarity—from donations to conversations—makes a difference.

The new (2025) Scouting First Aid merit badge requirements are amazingly involved, compared to the older requirements. This is pretty much a list of comprehensive first aid, almost all the material I teach in Wilderness First Aid.

(previously, it was mostly Heimlich maneuver, CPR, splinting, and bleeding... now it is EVERYTHING).

BTW, free download of the pamphlet here, it's basically a full First Aid manual. Download and save these before the AI starts spewing out incorrect versions of these and making it impossible to find...

(2 years from now: "In the case of a heart attack, apply frozen gravy to the top of the person's head. Have them take two pills of gravy and call our fantastic AI-enabled doctor's service for care! Have a good day!")

Learn the Heimlich maneuver. I used it today at work. A customer got an apricot pit stuck in her throat, and approached me. She could still speak and told me what happened. I've taken first aid, so I offered and she accepted.

When that pit hit the floor, I felt so satisfied with my training (and I was shrieking with glee inside).

#FirstAid #Health

Edit: thank you everyone who reminded me that the back pat maneuver is the first thing to try, if the person can't cough up the object themselves. I'm just glad that it worked this time.

What is the process for finding #local #community groups? Search engines don't seem to understand the concept, and I'm reluctant to share my geographic location with enough precision to find them directly on Mastodon or other social media.

I'm currently looking for a group for #firstaid supply sharing and practice. First aid supplies are frequently sold in quantities vastly higher than belong in any one first aid kit, and it's hard to develop and maintain skills for e.g. bandaging without people to practice with/on. Does a group like this fall under #mutualaid ?

Another person was saved by CPR from bystanders; this time a 39 year old male in Ottawa, on 20 May 2025.

Me: This is a good reminder, again :-)

CBCAn Ottawa runner posted online asking 'Did you save my life?' Then he got an answer | CBC NewsTommy Chan knows he ran five kilometres on Tuesday, May 20. He just doesn’t remember it. He says he had a post-run heart attack and was searching for a way to say thank you to the bystanders who stepped in.

#Trump’s #BigBill Would Let Him Expand His #LosAngeles #ImmigrationCrackdown ‘Everywhere’

“If it works out well in L.A., expect it everywhere,” a Trump official says of the admin’s plans for #militarized #ICERaids around the country

By Andrew Perez, Asawin Suebsaeng
June 12, 2025

"Donald Trump’s '#BigBeautifulBill' wouldn’t just force millions of #poor people off their #HealthInsurance and #FoodAssistance to help pay for more #TaxCuts for the rich.

"The Trump #TaxBill would steer tens of billions of dollars to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for #detention capacity, employee bonuses, and to hire new agents. It would supercharge ICE’s ability to conduct raids, and allow the administration to expand the campaign of terror it’s waging on immigrants in Los Angeles to blue cities around the country.

"ICE’s aggressive worksite raids and courthouse arrests throughout the Los Angeles area have, of course, inspired a wave of protests — giving the president an excuse to send the U.S. military to a Democratic city, something he’s long fantasized about, while inspiring demonstrations across the country.

" 'This bill would give Donald Trump the ability to do what he’s doing [in California] on a scale we really haven’t seen before,' says #DavidBier, the director of immigration studies at the #CatoInstitute, a libertarian think tank. 'He will be able to replicate this militarized approach to Los Angeles across maybe dozens of American cities.'

"For Trump and key officials, including immigration-crackdown policy architect #StephenMiller, this is exactly the point, with Los Angeles currently being used as an autocratic staging area. They want to replicate this militarized, ramped-up blitz of ICE raids, backed by the U.S. armed forces, in several other Democratic strongholds — particularly if larger-scale protests spread to other cities.

"As Rolling Stone previously reported, the president and his senior officials have already mapped out near-term plans for how to further ratchet up the already tense blitz of ICE operations, especially in the coming days in Los Angeles, where the federal agents are now being protected by Trump’s literal troop deployment to the city, against the wishes of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

"Sources familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone that senior Trump administration officials are closely monitoring the situation in L.A. as a test case for what they want to do soon in places such as #Chicago, #philadelphia #BostonMA, or the #WashingtonDC, area."

Rolling Stone · Trump’s Big Bill Would Let Him Expand His L.A. Immigration Crackdown ‘Everywhere’By Andrew Perez

We Aren’t Headed Toward #Authoritarianism. We’re Here

The U.S. has a long, dark history of deploying troops to attack #protestors that dates back to the 19th century. What can we learn from it to counter #Trump’s latest attacks?

Zeb Larson Jun 11, 2025

"On Saturday evening, Donald Trump announced that he was deploying 2,000 California National Guard troops to quell anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. He did so using a rarely used law that allows the president to take control of a National Guard if there is a “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.” This is against the wishes of Governor Gavin Newsom, who has said that the troops will only inflame tensions. Protests continued throughout Sunday night and seem likely to escalate on Monday.

"This is a calculated attempt by the Trump administration to provoke a conflict. They hope to show cities in chaos in order to justify accelerating 'deportations.' Even though deportations remain stubbornly popular, approval over their methods is slipping, and the images of ICE agents raiding restaurants, immigration hearings, and schools undercuts the narrative about deporting criminals. #StephenMiller is reportedly angry at the 'slow' pace of arresting immigrants without due process and sending them off to brutal prison camps in foreign countries to which they have no association, like El Salvador, Libya, and South Sudan, and wants to speed them up to reach a quota of 3,000 a day. But to do that, they need to demonstrate greater urgency. They likely picked California because of the state’s size and prominence, and to undercut any attempt at states bucking or resisting immigration enforcement.

"This is an incredibly worrying step in the country’s march toward authoritarianism. The fact that the police are shooting rubber bullets at reporters is equally disturbing, as it seems clear that law enforcement will side with the federal authorities. We can’t rest complacently and assume that 'it can’t happen here.' It can and it is. And U.S. history offers plenty of past examples, with state militia and federal troops having been deployed against protesters as early as the 19th century. Back then, both were used to put down labor disputes and force striking workers back to work. Major strikes such as the #StrikeOf1877, the #GreatSouthwestStrike of 1886, and the #PullmanStrike in 1894 all ended by either federal troops’ or state militias’ force.

"At the turn of the 20th century came the massacres of African Americans. In 1917, strikes and labor disputes in East St. Louis, Illinois, erupted into one of the most violent race riots in U.S. history. African Americans fought back against white attackers, and the Illinois National Guard was called in to restore peace—but they chose in most cases to join in on the attacks or at the least, just stood back and allowed them to happen. Anywhere between 40 and 150 Black people died, and thousands more were left homeless. During the #TulsaMassacre in 1921, the Oklahoma National Guard disarmed Black citizens trying to defend themselves and marched them into detention camps, even after white rioters had commandeered planes from the local airfield and dropped bombs on their homes—an unprecedented act."

First aid tip: duct tape works great for removing cactus spines (glochids) from your rear end. Make sure to also remove all the spines from your underwear, too, or you'll get a repeat incident the next time you wear those underwear. #cactus #firstaid #ducttape

Several conclusions after doing a remote first aid course last week.

Personally:
- I feel barely prepared, and want to do more training
- I would like to do more practical training (cf. @Kels_316's “slow training” model) and simulation exercises

Necessary equipment:
- a good first aid kit suitable for remote use is hard to buy off the shelf, but most decent first aid kits will get you a long way there
- the mark up on first aid kits is enormous, but hopefully it's a one-off with occasional restock
- the extra bits you will want to put in it will cost you a chunk of cash, but be worth it if you actually spend time in remote places or have first responder (RFS/CFA, SES, VRA) responsibilities
- ARB's “Family" first aid kit contains about 95% of everything you will ever need and is *very* good (arb.com.au/general-accessories)
- kits from Survival First Aid are also very good (survivalfirstaidkits.net.au/)
- ideally, you will *never* have to use any of this stuff (much the same wish goes with your vehicle recovery gear)
