The Gripen was in contention instead of the F-35 a few years ago. It's now in contention again due to you know what. Apparently they also have a new Rolls-Royce instead of the GE engine available.

Gripen is less expensive than F-35. Estimated operating cost of between $4,700 & $7,000 an hour compared to F35’s $33,000 to $40,000 an hour.

The F-35 is probably a better #fighter, on the whole, than the current version of the JAS 39. The F-47 will probably be better than the next version. But the best plane is the one you can get in the air.

Export restrictions, maintenance requirements, and the possibility of a "kill switch" make any US-built military aircraft a terrible bet for most customers. If Saab can find an alternate engine (the current powerplant is built by General Electric) then the #Gripen becomes a clearly better choice.

Saab claims its #ECM capabilities can be upgraded to make it the equal of any "stealth fighter." I don't know enough to evaluate this claim. I do know that if I were in charge of defense acquisitions for anywhere outside the US, I'd be willing to toss a coin to find out.

Colombia chooses the JAS-39 #Gripen as their next fighter aircraft, replacing the Kfir, an Israeli variant of the Mirage 5. This is the deal USA was supposed to veto based on Gripen using an American GE F414 engine.

If I'd been an aviation nerd, the Saab #Gripen would always had been one of favorite multirole fighter jets. So to #canada reevaluating and change from F-35 to Gripen-E

The Gripen was our second choice after the F-35 but now that we are re-examining the buy of F-35's I hope SAAB is re-tooling to use a European engine.

IT DOES NOT EFFING MATTER!

Those jets need a TON of maintenance and parts to keep flying. They need the Intel to find their targets which can only be fed to them using #US controlled systems.

Agent #Trump just needs to decide cease supplying those and the jets become WAY less capable immediately and will stop flying pretty damn quick.

#Portugal has decided it will not replace its current F-16 fighter jets with F-35s, and will instead consider European alternatives such as the #Rafale or #Gripen.

In a statement, the Ministry of defence stated: "The predictability of our allies must be taken into account when making procurement decisions" (updated translation)

Sweden will deploy JAS Griped fighter jets to Poland to protect NATO’s logistical support for Ukraine and conducting aerial surveillance over Poland.
