Space Catitude 🚀
Joshua Farmer has a PhD in agricultural science, but isn't fond of being called a "doctor". Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
Well, I finished the newsletter conversions. They went from September 2014 to April 2016. Which is also the first month I have "Monthly Summaries", so that zips up that continuity.

Before that, there are a lot of individual articles on the Production Log. And I recently created annual summaries for 2009-2015. Which is probably adequate. I'm also writing up that period with the "History" articles, which is a more intentional sort of presentation, with specific themes.

And well... I guess that means I'm running out of excuses not to get more animation finished, huh...? 😆 #LunaticsProject #History

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
Writing a personal project history, with all the ups and downs is pretty emotionally draining. I relive the whole roller coaster ride of successes and failures. But I do think it's important to record it.

I have now published four of the proposed seven-part series on the history of the "Lunatics!" project, which will probably become the backbone of a book I plan to write about it, to be called "Film Making for Lunatics":

1 - Inspirations & Origins
https://lunaticsproject.org/2023/07/05/project-history-1-origins/

2 - Vision
https://lunaticsproject.org/2023/08/06/project-history-p2-vision/

3 - Launches & Misfires
https://lunaticsproject.org/2023/09/06/project-history-3/

4 - Fixed Media Publishing
https://lunaticsproject.org/2025/10/12/project-history-4/

As you can see from the dates, it's taking me awhile.

I've started on part 5, "Soldiering On", but it was just an empty page, so far! In this one, I plan to document the initial attempt to continue the project without funding, running on vapor, as it were.

Part 6, "After the Fire' is to be exactly what it says -- picking up the pieces and continuing after a fire damaged our premises and my computer in 2013.

and Part 7, will hopefully cover the final stretch to releasing Episode One. Which is hopefully going to happen Real Soon™
So that'll probably be the longest time period covered, although not necessarily the longest article.
#LunaticsProject #History #ProjectHistory #OpenMovie #FilmMakingForLunatics

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
Trimmed and synced, it's about 3 hrs of video (so far -- I expect there will be some pick-ups, or at least some conclusions).

So I'll have to figure out what of that can just be cut out and what parts can be sped up. Really would prefer this to be < 30 min.

But I'm not sure if that's possible while still conveying the process and results.

#LunaticsProject #Blender3d # #Tutorial #Experiment

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
Well, I've recorded a lot of footage and I've learned some things about using NLA action strips.

I had my regular daily screencast logger running all day.

Plus I used Vokoscreen at much higher 10 fps to record sessions. And I have a video camera setup to look sort of over-my-shoulder, but I can turn and talk too it between steps. And of course, it's picking up my talking all during each session.

We'll see if I can turn that into something coherent.

I think maybe I will need to re-record voice over after the fact, using the camera video/audio as reference.

The basic idea worked for extracting a base pose out of an animated movement, and then adding it back as an additive movement (so I can combine more than one).

BUT... the animation baking process creates a keyframe for every frame, which is kind of ugly. It might not matter if I don't need to tweak the animation. But if I do, I'll need to find a way to simplify it.

Possibly just manually deleting keyframes and tweaking bezier handles. Slow, but at least the baked animation would provide guidance.

There's more to do with this test, but I think maybe I will wrap this up as a "Part 1" and come back to the rest. #LunaticsProject #Blender3d # #Tutorial #Experiment

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
Honestly, I don't expect to get much push back over the political post. It's pretty obvious stuff, and I doubt there's really a lot of right-wingers following me (if I'm wrong, feel free to keep on keeping that to yourself).

But I bet this next one will raise a bit of ire, because I felt I had to weigh in on the subject of generative AI.

In particular, I experimented with Stable Diffusion prompt-to-image generation in 2022. I haven't really revisited the technology, though I know it has improved, and I have followed some people who are using it.

I've heard a lot of different criticisms and analysis of it, from many different angles. I was particularly compelled by the "forklift at the gym" analogy that I used for the featured image here, because that made me think about the significance of artistic endeavors, not just as finished works, but as process.

"AI, Automation, Ritual, and Process in Art"

https://lunaticsproject.org/2025/08/11/ai-automation-ritual-and-process-in-art/

#LunaticsProject

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
The July timelapse is longer. I was hoping to finish up the episode in July, though that didn't happen.

I DID finish up the Mission Control shots for the "Launch" sequence though, which was a major hurdle. So I feel pretty good about that.

I also converted the two Soyuz interior shots that I had pulled over from the following "Soyuz Flight" sequence into "Launch". These are now "LA-6-A" & "LA-6-B". I started working on the lipsync for LA-6-B, but there's more work to do there (I might get back to that this week -- but I'm going to be taking this VERY slowly: this is more about keeping me from climbing the walls than about getting any objectives met).

https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/5csJqkh9zmpEhh3TM57vWK

#LunaticsProject #Timelapse #July2025

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
And there's now a summary article about June to go with that:

https://lunaticsproject.org/2025/06/30/june-2025-summary/

#LunaticsProject #Summary #June2025

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
I've been on a bit of an unplanned creative hiatus, due to catching CoViD on August 1st. It hit me like a ton of bricks, with a bad fever and congestion. I've been very gradually recovering since then. At present, I don't feel much except fatigue and brain fog, but those symptoms are very real.

Nevertheless, I did finish up timelapses and summaries for June and July.

The June timelapse was kind of short, owing to quite a bit of non-production work, including some emergency fixes to my web servers.

https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/pdDp19x6f6By47AGGjyQMd

Includes final compositing for "Suiting Up" and re-linking and re-blocking for the "Launch / Mission Control" shots (major changes to set and extras characters, which had to be updated in the shot files, and I re-thought some of the shots, resulting in some more re-timing).

#LunaticsProject #Timelapse #June2025

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
So, I got my renders back from the server on the Mission Control Shots.

Frankly, they need a bit more love.

I need to add the video texture on the center screen for shots A & C. It IS used in shot D (the transition shot I showed stills from last night). But it hardly matters, the static image would've looked as well in that one, because we barely glimpse it.

Also, the camera movement in D is a bit disappointing towards the end: the camera seems to hover/drift a bit before moving in on the Capcom. I think that should move faster -- which would have the added benefit of showing the lip-sync on her line better (she actually has two lines in this shot: first she asks Sergei about the "ride" in Russian, then she asks about the crew, in English -- presumably because she knows they are listening and are English speakers).

https://tv.filmfreedom.net/w/raHduNr9GPqpmfvRY8g43J

There is no sound in this test video.
#LunaticsProject #WIP #Blender3D #Kdenlive

Worked on the Lunatics release page CSS a little.

I had noticed that the page works very poorly on e-ink devices like my InkPad 3 Color reader's browser, because of the animated background effect, which I'm still pretty attached to.

It moves pretty slowly, but it still created updates with constant flickering as my e-reader tried to keep up.

Of course, the page is really designed to distribute or stream video, so it's normally intended for full-motion video browsers. The video is never going to work right on an e-reader.

But there's also credits and other text information on the site.

So, I looked up methods to fix this with CSS media queries, and I think it's fixed now.

It now only animates if the browser reports media type "screen" and feature "update: fast".

And this correctly suppresses animation now on my InkPad 3 Color e-reader. If you happen to have a similar device or other oddball browser, I'd be interested if the page is working for you.

Still working on honoring other parameters like "prefers-reduced-motion", "prefers-color-scheme", and "prefers-contrast". I would like to get those working as well.

Ultimately, I may add a Javascript button to change the behavior manually, but the page currently is HTML and CSS only to keep it lighter weight.

I did also test it in a text-only browser, w3m, where it looks pretty correct. Haven't tried other ones.

lunatics.tvLunatics!-Episodes

Timing is so critical in animation.

And visual storytelling in general, I guess.

I've decided I want to let the length of the episode grow slightly, but how best to use the extra time..? Without tripping up the pacing..?

🤔

I did feel that the mission control room was being underused a bit. So I'm giving it 20 or 30 more seconds in this edit, with a couple of moving camera shots to take in a bit more. Of course, that will also require retiming the audio again.
