Stream 385,000 Vintage 78 RPM Records at the Internet Archive: Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Billie Holiday & More via Open Culture[Shared]

We may have yet to develop the technology of time travel, but recorded music comes pretty close. Those who listen to it have experienced how a song or an album can, in some sense, transport them right back to the time they first heard it. But older records also have the much stranger power to conjure up eras we never experienced. You can musically send yourself as far back as the nineteen-twenties with the above Youtube playlist of digitized 78 RPM records from the George Blood collection.

Ever wondered what the Baltic Sea or the southern Indian coast sounds like? Or how a stroll through Brescia’s old town feels acoustically? In my latest blog post, I invite you to explore these and other places visually and through sound. I compare photos and recordings of the same location to show how time and space are experienced differently through sight and hearing.

I’m irrationally annoyed by people who hold hand-held microphones at their waist or chest level…just holding it there, pointing it approximately at the sky…instead of pointing it at their mouths and maintaining a constant distance. I’m so annoyed by this that I sometimes close videos just because the speaker does this.

I understand that some modern mics (especially those lapel-style box microphones that influencers inexplicably prefer to hold in their hands) have an array of directional mics and they do noise cancellation and beam steering and blah blah so the audio is just as good or whatever, but I just can’t stand it.

The only thing that annoys me more is when people _gesture_ with their mics. Tell me you have no idea how sound recording works, why don’t you. Where’s that Close button?

@trevorflowers their most fresh news are posted on their mastodon account, including the arrival of their PnP machine :blobaww: . By the way, if you're into #soundrecording too, there's a nice opportunity window for building a modular open source high quality audio recorder (it's in my head since eons...) I'm not alone eyeing the BeagleBone for this: diyaudio.com/community/threads There is the Bela team who has built a great learning hub around their BB cape: bela.io

diyAudioDIY portable audio recorderI want to build a portable, robust SD audio recorder with two channels, 24 bit sample width, 96 kHz sampling frequency, phantom power and sturdy XLR connectors and pots. And high audio quality, of course. As I am not an experienced programmer I thought of using an embedded linux board like the...

eBird is running a competition in September where they ask people to upload at least 20 birding lists with 1 or more sound recordings.
I thought that it is a nice challenge, but I started a bit late. I am only at 4 recordings now (but I might have some more in Merlin).
This focusing on sound does produce some results however.

nr. 4: An alarm call from a Lesser Whitethroat from the garden. I actually gave the recording a 5/5.

I've built a simple apparatus to measure synchronization between the audio and video tracks produced by cameras. Kind of an electronic clapper 🎬 but rotating: a precise event is filmed (image) and recorded (sound). I interpolate between successive positions of the LED to get the (fractional video) time when the arm touches the wire and compare it to the corresponding time clic in the sound file. #videoproduction #soundrecording #VideoPro #Maker
