Shadows of a Lost Giant
The tree stood tall for many years, but last month it was cut down. I felt sad seeing the empty space, but its brittle branches showed it was time. Though it’s gone, I’ll always remember its beauty in spring.
A lonely branch on the tree of life. Olive warblers are a species of new world songbird, though they aren't actually warblers. In fact, they are not only the sole member of their genus, they are also part of a monophyletic family. They aren't closely related to any other bird. Their next closest relatives, if you go back far enough, are probably the accentors, a strictly old world family that includes dunnocks. Toluca, México, October 2024
