My first blog post on Diff in a long while. Probably most interesting to people interested in #WikimediaCommons and/or #PublicDomain. https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/07/31/introducing-commonsdb/

Hmm, this seems like a lot of caveats and hoops to jump through for accessing "free" content:
https://engage.gettyimages.com/bhcc-request
Not exactly surprising coming from #Getty, who (along with #Alamy) allowed other contributors to sell licenses to public domain photos I had taken and uploaded to #WIkimediaCommons, without noting that these photos were available for free.
"These features rely on tons of our user-generated data—the fuel of the platform... Crucially to the business, we users perform this crucial labor for free and without any say in the direction of the platform."
And this is why I stopped contributing to #MapyCom (and pretty much all proprietary platforms) and started contributing to #OpenStreetMap and #WikimediaCommons last year.
Yes! #TomLehrer sheet music is available on (among other places) #WikimediaCommons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Tom_Lehrer
If you think media is important for open knowledge, but don't enjoy creating it, here's a great blog post of other important tasks you can help with: https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/07/27/tidbits-for-commons-contributions-you-dont-have-to-be-a-photographer/

Fun and very informative video!
We offer CC licensing as an option for our writers' stories, and have also suggested #WikimediaCommons as an option for images: https://commons.wikimedia.org

For all #WikimediaCommons people, I wrote a high-level overview of the copyright management on Commons. If you would like to take a look and see if I missed something vital, I would greatly appreciate it: https://se.wikimedia.org/wiki/Projekt:CommonsDB_registry/Commons_copyright_managament_summary_for_IVIR

Hallo Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, ich musste "leider" euer Wackbild, das ihr mir auf dem CSD in Köln gegeben hat, für Wikipedia als Beispiel für den Artikel [[Linienrasterbild]] verwenden. Vielen Dank. Wieder einen Wikipedia-Artikel mit einem Video versehen.
Been adding restaurant ratings and reviews to Mangrove Reviews @mangroveReviews using MapComplete @MapComplete (and places to OpenStreetMap and photos to Wikimedia Commons, as usual)
I’ve written 6 reviews so far, and there’s more to come! Plenty of WIP drafts to finish
This really plays to my strengths, combining my love for
If you like my open data reviews, photos, and places, please support me on Liberapay! I need to be able to afford eating out to continue reviewing
PS - MapComplete currently removes all line breaks from the reviews it displays (which breaks things like paragraphs and bullet lists), and Mangrove Reviews truncates the text of the reviews it displays. So there’s no perfect way to view the reviews right now…I’ve let the developers know about these issues and they will hopefully fix them soon.
PPS - Mangrove Reviews stores ratings as a score out of 100. MapComplete displays ratings as fractional stars, but Mangrove Reviews displays them as integer stars. So ratings may look different between the two.
Update: Got the right now
There will be things happening under #SaveOurSigns soon.
Is here someone experienced in setting up #WikimediaCommons Upload Campaigns?
If yes, I got a question re requesting the permission to create one :)

Boosts very welcome

Calling all map and train nerds in #Perth (who'd imagine that there'd be a crossover?): this Sunday is the opening of the new railway line Q120871210, and there's going to be an #OpenStreetMap meetup and travelling mapping party:

(We'll be uploading photos to #WikimediaCommons.)
Ordner mit Unterlagen > 10 Jahre gesichtet und geschreddert. Und dabei noch mind. 1 interessantes Dokument für #Wikipedia #WikimediaCommons gefunden.
Vielleicht erinnert ihr euch: Mehr als 8 Jahre mussten gesetzlich Versicherte EUR 10 / Quartal beim Arztbesuch bezahlen.

Released into the #PublicDomain and uploaded it on #WikimediaCommons, together with the #Mathematica code used to generate it: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shack-Hartmann.gif

Ächz. An einem (!) Tag in Hamburg 499 Fotos gemacht. Wie lange werde ich wohl für Auswahl, Entwicklung, Hochladen, Beschriften und Kategorisieren auf Wikimedia Commons brauchen?
I don't think Wikimedia Commons is enough of an alternative, but is the best that exists.
- Wikimedia foundation is underfunded and gets attacked by many powerful people are against it.
- All images uploaded are licensed as Creative Commons or Public Domain, which is good but many people don't want to put a permissive license on their pictures. Photos added to Google Maps don't have to do this and remain copyrighted.

Gestern Abend noch nach der Sendung "Maischberger" die Gäste fotografiert. Leider habe ich dabei auch 2 bestehende Fotos wegen Urheberrechtsverletzungen zum Löschen vorschlagen müssen.
