"Five ways to cut the cost of heat pumps"
#UK #UnitedKingdom #HeatPumps #Energy
https://inews.co.uk/news/environment/ways-cut-cost-heat-pumps-3634474
If heat pumps are part of the necessary green transition, then it is pretty clear the economic model for energy needs t change to make the switch a worthwhile project for households.... certainly they may be greener, but in the UK's economy, still experiencing an ongoing cost-of-living crisis, most households cannot afford to transit to heat pumps in the current market structure(s).
China includes heat pump flexibility (smart controls, storage) in its strategy for heat pumps. More detail needed to make the most of that potential:

@akurjata have you worked out the annual kWh threshold where this makes sense to switch?
This is the type of reporting where the #CBC really pisses me off. #heatpumps and #electriccars in themselves save energy.
Its people with large houses hot tubs and baseboard heating that can save costs this way.
"Finland's [almost] last active #coal-fired power and heat plant shuts down"
«Environmental campaigners Beyond Fossil Fuels pointed out that Finland's coal exit was "near total", with two small plants elsewhere in #Finland still using some coal in their output and a third coal plant remaining in strategic use for emergencies or consumption peaks.»
Anyone here upgraded thier electric home hot water tank to a heat-pump based unit? What kind of savings have you realized?
Despite some setbacks, experts are optimistic about heat pump expansion.
In places like Maine, it’s clear that cost savings and emissions reductions lead to real change.
This is more than a trend; it’s a sustainable shift in energy use! #ClimateSolutions #HeatPumps
March update! 480 tools to help Europeans use energy smartly.
Smart EV charging & heat pump operation, hot water tank controls, bring savings and comfort to consumers and much-needed flexibility to the electricity system.

UK homes install subsidised #HeatPumps at record level
"Ed Matthew, [of] think tank E3G, said the decision by the previous government to increase the grant by 50% has had the biggest impact on the installation figures.
In a major report published last month, the UKCCC said that the cost of electricity could be brought down if the levies applied to electricity bills, to fund the cost of social and environment schemes, were removed or placed on gas bills."
"We need to switch to heat pumps fast – but can they can overcome this problem?"
Americans bought 32% more heat pumps than the next-most-popular heating appliance, gas furnaces, last year. That smashes 2023’s record-setting lead of 21%. #climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #environment #heatpumps https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/heat-pumps/heat-pumps-keep-widening-their-lead-on-gas-furnaces
Fascinating article about window unit #heatpumps tested in #NYCHA public housing. They used 87% less energy than steam heat!
"Essentially, NYCHA leveraged its buying power to spark innovation and make this new kind of product available in the market."

Half of homes will need heat pumps by 2040

Companies that have recently pissed me off:
Liquorland.
Delivery truck does not use the delivery dock, but stops on the street, reverses at a angle so they can use the raised part of the pedestrian crossing as a unloading dock. Not safe for drivers, pedestrians or their own staff and against DA.
Been going on for months. Contacted them, with out improvement. Today got dobbed into council, local MP and media.
Cyanergy.
Talked to them about a cheap heatpump hot water system 2 years ago. Keep calling me even when I tell them not to call me. First rule of sales, don't piss the potential customer off as now there is definitely no way I am buying from them.
While we are at it,
Resinc Solar.
Similar, except door to door sales. Very pushy, won't take no. Also no up front cost sees you pay more.
#OctopusEnergy have released Cosy Boost credits. For those with Cosy #HeatPumps They are going to credit your account with £1 any evening the temperature drops below zero degrees.
Just checked the data and it looks like 10 occurrences since the beginning of the year!
At laboratory stage but promising:
Heat pumps without compressors: Fraunhofer advances electrocalorics
"Novel concept: solid-state #HeatPumps based on #electrocaloric materials that do not run on harmful #refrigerants and could potentially be more efficient than compressor-based systems."
"Geothermal heat pumps are crazy efficient. Should you get one?"
