It's been a long time since I've participated in the community, but I watched a video today of someone's very #TinyHouse and it got me thinking about it again.

Here's the thing: there are very few people for whom a #THoW actually makes rational sense, because they are the most inefficient use of land and #housing materials possible.

Most people should be in #multiunit #MixedUse #midrise #apartment #buildings, but for some people, THoWs can literally be life savers. #urbanism #architecture

threadreaderapp.com/thread/184 Fascinating thread from Noah Smith in #mixeduse #walkable #urbanism with a lot of focus on the #paris model I talk about a lot, but especially the vertical #zakkyo model which I’ve heard of, but not in detail. Zoning and building code in the U.S. would make zakkyo here rare and expensive, but I’m fascinated to learn that #nyc has already started

threadreaderapp.comThread by @Noahpinion on Thread Reader App@Noahpinion: 1/Here's something a lot of people I talk to don't understand about Japanese urbanism, and why Japanese cities are so special. 2/Japanese cities feel different than big, dense cities elsewhere -- NYC, L...…

Restrictive #zoning practices are part of the problem, but they are not by any means the primary cause of the #HousingCrisis.

Zoning alone doesn't explain why more #development and #redevelopment isn't happening in places where zoning already permits it.

These are the places that are in high demand—city and town centers that already have #multiunit, #multistory, #MixedUse #MissingMiddle buildings.

The other shoes are #tax #policy and economic outlook.

Proposing to keep the basic shape of a #YIMBY 2024 platform as the 2023 platform:

* No new motorways, or widenings of existing ones
* Ban car parking minimums
* Barcelona blocks & 15k ppl / km² as minimum zoning
* All areas mixed use
* Copenhagen street design
* E-bikes included in all new build housing
* Step-free transit stations
* Parks for all
* Renewable energy
* and most of all:
Build
More
Housing

What say you, fellow urbanism nerds?

#LongRead here from McKinsey - but one that I think anyone interested in #Cities, #Urbanism, #FutureOfWork and generally how humans live will find interesting.

I haven't finished all of it. But I was inspired to jump in by this bit from the exec summar:

"Cities and buildings can adapt and thrive by taking hybrid approaches themselves. Priorities might include developing #mixedUse #neighborhoods, constructing more adaptable buildings, and designing multiuse #office and #retail space."

The #Hybrid space is something that I've been passionate about for a long time. Mono-culture (work, play, housing) can lead to stagnation and, frankly, boring places.

Mix it up a bit! Give humans at work somewhere for a nice walk and a coffee. Give humans at home somewhere to cycle and plug in a laptop. Give humans at play... Well, more play.

Long/short for me - make places for humans, not for mono-use... Am looking forward to reading the rest of this!
