Pollarded beech trees in Gorbea Natural Park, EuskalHerria
A pollarded beech is a tree that was pruned using the pollarding technique, consisting of the elimination of the main branches of the tree or its trunk from a height of about 2 meters. Thanks to this action, new shoots of branches were obtained, which were collected every 7-15 years approximately, proceeding again to pruning, and keeping the tree standing. The abandonment of this technique has caused that the trees currently have this peculiar appearance, often in the form of a candelabra.
