I'm torn about this research. On the one hand it's incredibly hopeful, but on the other it's cruel and brutal to the animal subjects.

I wish we'd take the energy we're wasting on large language models and use it to model this stuff so we could learn the same things without harming animals.

The Hell of it is that I'm not sure I'd stop the research, if I had a magic switch that would do so.

Update. New study: "I discuss data sharing and re-use as a moral imperative for research that uses #animals in neuroscience. I argue that we are ethically required to make sure that we gain as much knowledge as possible from the animals we use, and that doing so involves making sure that the data from our experiment makes it into the public record of knowledge."

In the U.S., residents are warned after 43 monkeys escape South Carolina research facility.

From @CBSNews: "Residents are strongly advised to keep doors and windows secured to prevent these animals from entering homes," police said earlier. "If you spot any of the escaped animals, please contact 911 immediately and refrain from approaching them."

In research on #animals "it is essential that the results are communicated to maximum effect to avoid…duplication of experiments & to make the best use of the resulting data. Alternatives to animal testing…need to gain maximum exposure to ensure the most significant possible contribution to the Three Rs (i.e. Reduction, Refinement or Replacement of animal testing)."
