Running out of arguments when debating why commercial platforms and ‘AI’ are bad? Why we should be wary of vendors’ promises?

I’ve compiled a list of links to sources which I believe to be helpful in convincing others of leaving commercial platforms’ and software giants’ walled gardens.

Last week I spent the whole week offline. This week Im feeling it's the best thing Ive done for my mental health in a long time. This is your online reminder to take offline breaks; enjoy the natural world!

I truly value staying connected with you all globally, but there is something unnatural for sure receiving so much of a negative news feed. Being based in the US, in the current dumpster fire it is, it's been interesting connecting, reading & seeing more global perspectives on Mastodon, and the fediverse overall. I am around a diverse enough group of people locally, offline, to recognize how much varying information we receive based on where we choose to look. This community is playing an important role in shaping the future voices to be in the world. Thank you for being here.

Photos are from recent attempt to summit Mt Baker. Furthest I have solo ski climbed on glacial terrain this late in the year. Strong wind pushed me back, varying dense clouds circled around, found enough reasons to turn around. Words I found as a kid "respect the mountain, the mountain will respect you." Remember to carry that which you value into the future. Cheers to the future we will bring!

I just removed #DuckDuckGo as my default search engine and from my search engines in general, because they keep promoting their AI bullshit and because the ddg seaches for "ban ai", "ai ban" and the same in German yields 0 results - while when removing the quotes you get a lot of AI propaganda.

I now use @Mojeek and hope I won't be disappointed (PS: I already am. Mojeek is also AI bs.).

On mobile I used the ddg app as my browser the past months and since I don't have it in me to do the research for the least suckiest mobile browser again I'll see how long I'll make it without a browser.

Lineage OS straight up freezed for half a minute because I dared to deinstall the default browser app.

Maybe I'll soon switch to a feature phone anyway. My dad is one of my most important contacts on Signal and his old iPhone refuses to update Signal, so he'll be out soon.

Also I don't want to depend on toxic F-Droid anymore.

Für mich ist das auch oft umgedreht! Wenn ich auf Handy schaue ist das #AnalogDetox, um mit dem Scheiß zurecht zu kommen, der auf mich einprasselt. Ich betreibe Selfcare und selbst wenn es Nachrichten sind die ich lese ist das inneres #Bloomscrolling. Diese Abwertung alles Digitalen ist nurnoch albern.

Life got loud. Like… too loud. So I packed up a telescope, drove into the bush, and spent a night under the stars — no emails, no noise, no phone signal (accidentally).

It wasn’t about the perfect shot or the clearest sky. I just needed to sit in the dark and remember I’m a tiny speck in a massive universe… and somehow that made everything feel okay.

Seit einer Woche mache ich einen Selbstversuch bei dem ich bewusst und absichtlich auf den Konsum von YouTube verzichte. Wie es dazu kam und was ich nach einer Woche bereits an Veränderungen bemerke, darüber möchte ich nun berichten.

Soon, I’ll be throwing away all my desktop computers as well, though I’m keeping my Lenovo Thinkpad around. I hate computers, yet I use them.

To me, computers are just junk nobody asked for. They’re glowing traps that keep us hooked, scrolling and clicking away our time for endless feeds. No matter the OS or hardware, it’s all distraction from reality.

Yes, Linux can free us and all that, and even the hardware can be part of that freedom. But the computers themselves remain a circus of junk nobody wanted, a noisy distraction that too often chains us to control and chaos. It’s a digital con, plain and simple.

Time to unplug the lie and reclaim what’s left of my mind.

Darum gibt’s in der Zeit keine Infos darüber, wie viel grüner Strom am nächsten Tag im Netz sein wird, um den Geschirrspüler oder die Waschmaschine möglichst klimafreundlich zu betreiben oder das E-Auto mit möglichst wenig CO2-Emissionen zu laden.
