The Suriname cherry (aka Brazilian cherry) is considered invasive to Florida and people generally consider that to be a bad thing, but we’ve been experiencing drought since 2023 and I think we should reevaluate our feelings towards plants that produce food without human intervention or even rain.

We should consider the Suriname cherry a miracle food. They are rich in Vitamin A & C, potassium and antioxidants. All this from sandy, nutrient-poor soil and little hydration. The ones in this photo are from the hedge between mine and my neighbor’s yard. You’ll see this plant randomly in neighborhoods, along the sidewalk.

Pigeon peas, mangos, chaya and papayas are other edible plants that require little to no care, are drought tolerant, and give us nutrient-rich food. We struggle to grow “conventional” foods in our gardens, yet nature provides with ease. Lean into it.

The day this immigrant first discovered chokos.

"The humble choko is often seen as nothing more than a creeping wild vine across Australian backyards, sheds and neighbourhoods, but this fruit has a long and travelled history.

Originating in Mexico, where it was a staple food for the Aztecs and other indigenous societies, the choko travelled from Central America to Europe during the Columbian exchange in the 16th century. From there, it traversed Asia and, finally, came to Australia.

... While it’s better known in Chinese cuisine as a staple vegetable with various cooking methods, the history of its culinary use in Australia is far different.

... Chokos in Australia were known as a ’filler’ for low-income families during the Great Depression. Given the choko's ability to grow wild and yield plenty of crops, it was seen as a free backyard source of fibre and nutrition. I can understand why some people can’t touch choko if they ate it a lot in their younger years and got sick of it – I’m not sure I would want to eat it a couple of times a week." Today in Labor History February 4, 1974: The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) kidnapped Patty Hearst, granddaughter of American publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, in Berkeley, California. One of the SLA’s demands for releasing Hearst was for her family to pay for millions of dollars’ worth of food to be given out free the poor and unhoused of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Hearst complied, with various community organizations distributing 100,000 bags of groceries at 16 sites in 4 counties, before violence brought the program to a halt. The violence occurred because the crowds were bigger than expected and workers started throwing boxes of food off of moving trucks. As a captive, Patty Hearst was held in a closet, blindfolded, with her hands tied, raped and threatened repeatedly with death. She was later offered the choice of freedom, or joining the SLA. She chose the latter. Consequently, she was later sentenced to 35 years in prison for her complicity in SLA robberies. After several years in prison, her sentence was commuted by President Carter. President Clinton pardoned her. Congressional Representative Leo Ryan was murdered by the Jim Jones cult in Guyana several weeks after collecting signatures for her release. Actor John Wayne, of all people, expressed frustration that everyone accepted the idea that Jones had brainwashed hundreds of his followers into mass suicide, but wouldn’t accept that the SLA could have brainwashed a teenage girl. After her release, Hearst went on to become an actress, appearing in several John Waters films, as well as many others.

I wanted to capture the essence of community support and kindness through this artwork. The vibrant colors and the inviting imagery aim to create a sense of comfort and hope. I hope to encourage others to think about the role we all play in helping those who are hungry.

@jigmedatse @tinker - This specific pantry is not formal at all, but we work with formal groups as well, specifically the local food bank, from time to time. They are very formal, but we dont means test.

So normally the fridge is just the neighborhood putting our extra food there for our neighbors to eat. But once a month the food bank uses our group to distribute out food to the neighbors as well. We keep any leftover food and continue to distribute it through the fridge until its all claimed.

There are religious groups that have pantries and even hot cooked meals (diff groups cook hot meals once a night so every night there is a free hot meal somewhere).

The different groups work together and make sure there's enough coverage and we all do it our own way.

So yeah, we're a bit anarchistic, the free fridge specifically. But we work with everyone to make sure everyone is fed.
