Electoral Register could be off by 500,000 voters. This would mean that instead of the poor 60% turnout recorded in #GE24, a more accurate figure would be closer to 70% turnout.

(BTW the official turnout figure excludes spoilt votes, I don't agree with this omission. In some cases those spoilt votes are no fault of the voter, e.g. failure to stamp ballot paper, in other cases the vote has been deliberately spoiled to make a political point.)

I saw an Instagram post this morning asking what music each party leader was listening to during #GE24 and the answers are...well:

Micheál Martin: Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Diamond, Pavarotti
Simon Harris: Coldplay, Oasis
Mary Lou McDonald: Alison Moyet
Ivana Bacik: Sinéad O'Connor, Julie Feeney, Everything But The Girl
Roderic O'Gorman: Sigur Rós
Richard Boyd Barrett: Ska/Punk/Reggae, Christy Moore
Cian O'Callaghan: Damien Dempsey
Michael Collins: Springsteen, Bryan Adams
Peadar Tóibín: Pixies

Labour and the SocDems may fear being punished if they enter into government with FF/FG now, but they risk being punished to an even greater extent if they refuse the opportunity to deliver on the environment policies that were so lauded during the election campaign. And in the end, we will all suffer if we don't take climate action seriously.

Given their rejection of key commitments on sustainable transport and clean energy at the last cabinet meeting, when they no longer relied on Green support, there is very little hope that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael can be trusted to follow through on the kind of action that is needed to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.

I've been thinking about the idea that Labour & SocDems might eschew government this time around in order to build a strong centre left alliance ahead of the next General Election.

That might be the politically sensible thing to do but climate change and biodiversity loss isn't going to just hold off for another five years until it is more politically expedient for Labour and the SocDems to enter government.

Next steps! Please consider getting involved in tenants/workers unions and in community groups, especially if you're also a young person.

Change is about more than voting once every 5 years; it is something we must all collectively fight for day-to-day!

We may finally be nearing the end of the count in the last constituency, Cavan Monaghan, with no change to the numbers I posted above. Matt Carthy's surplus will elect his party colleague Cathy Bennett and her surplus won't be enough to prevent Aontú's Sarah O'Reilly from being eliminated which means Niamh Smyth and Brendan Smith of Fianna Fáil will both be elected.

NOTE: of the four parties with zero female TDs, Aontú has two seats; Independent Ireland, four; Greens, one; and 100% Redress, one. Obviously in the case of the last two it was going to be all or nothing!

Generally the left have done better, with the exception of Labour. Fine Gael proving their centrist credentials by being closest to the average.

A quick look at female representation in the new Dáil - only marginally better than the last one which was 22.5% at the start of the Dáil.

Only three parties converted the min 30% female candidate ratio into representation in the Dáil. Fianna Fáil by far the worst of the larger parties.

They ran three candidates in #GE24, Carolyn Fahy in Meath East, Gerben Uunk in Limerick County (the Veggie Viking who you might remember from the Limerick Mayor TV debate) and Molly Candon in Sligo Leitrim.

They got more first preference votes than both Rabharta and the Centre Party who also both ran three candidates.

Uunk survived until Count 4 in Limerick and Fahy to Count 3 in Meath East.
