Was there in January! Had a touch of blue sky in between the showers, and plenty of lovely mega-herbs. Wonderful place to experience.

Royal Penguin on the beach at Macquarie Island. Amazing little creatures, each and every one of them full of personality and bravado.

Wrapping up my editing for the Macquarie Island trip. Was taking roughly 7,000 frames a day with the burst mode on. That's a lot of files to delete.
Also, penguins can fly!

Watching the penguin pairs coming ashore is really something else. Moments of tenderness that are so expressive.
Fifteen years ago I got a chance to sail down to Macquarie Island, the last stop before you reach the Antarctic Confluence and the ice of East Antarctica.
Last week I got a chance to go back, and the Royal Penguins did not dissapoint. They are amazing little critters, full of personality and curiosity.
We had some lovely sunshine the first night sailing out of Bluff. Weather has been very "oceanic" since then however :)
Our vessel is the Heritage Adventurer, a Finnish built expedition ship with a heavy emphasis on comfort. Pretty good for spotting albatross too!
The great reveal at Adachi. Carefully manicured Dry Landscape Garden where every stone and pebble is held with respect, and the audience are kept inside the fish bowl to admire behind the glass.
Comes down to how many Tonehs you prefer. The Sigma 35mm F2 is very nice for my style. But a regular F2.8 zoom is popular with lots of other people.
I'm in Japan for a few weeks working on an expedition voyage. 95% of my shots are with a 35mm prime. F2. I'm using the LUMIX one. Every so often I pull out the 100mm macro, either for a flower or at a festival! It's great as a light telephoto.
