New England has direct democracy for town government in many towns. Which means that anybody can go to town meeting where we decide on the budget and zoning laws and pretty much anything in the town. There are committees that figure out the important bits, and there's a board of selectmen and various other elected boards, but it's the people who actually get to decide.

It's a bit of a zoo. Because anybody can get up and object to something and make an amendment -- and they do! And then they object to the meeting moderator's call of the voice vote and make us all have a standing vote. But, it is still kind of cool, despite everything taking way longer than it ought to. We were there for five hours on Monday night and four hours on Tuesday night.

Of course, in some ways it's really "non-representative democracy", because a lot of people don't go, because it's not convenient for them to be awake until midnight (it wasn't really convenient for me, but I stayed anyway), or they just don't care enough to spend their evening sitting around the high school auditorium listening to people drone on about this or that planning board initiative.

Republican congresswoman booed at a town hall in Indiana
Mar 29, 2025
As with other town halls held by Republicans across the country, Congresswoman Victoria Spartz was met in her Indiana district by a group of angry constituents who challenged her on the decisions being made by the Trump administration, from threatening to cut public media funding to deporting migrants without due process.

I spoke on the microphone several times at Town Meeting today (against the police budget, for having the town clerk's position maybe be appointed and not elected). The last time, as I was thanking people for showing up, I said "Democracy is a pain in the ass" and I was very proud of me because I am sure we were all thinking it, a bit tired out after three hours of discussion, debate and voting, but I do believe it beats most alternatives.

Today I gave 2 lectures to 2 University of Warsaw classes back to back. Students were Polish and international, some I knew from France and Sweden.

One speech was "Town Hall or Town Meeting: Contrasting Campaign Rhetoric with a Symbol of Deliberative Democracy." I explained the differences between the contrived CNN spectacle & the direct democracy legislatue in most Massachusetts municipalities.

Today is #TownMeeting day in #Vermont and so I am serving a 4-hour shift working at the polls. My job is super simple:

- stand near the voting machine and make sure there are no issues with the ballots going into the machine (and call our Town Clerk over if there is an issue)

- give people an “I Voted” sticker if they want one 😃 (and give “Future Voter” stickers to any kids who come with their parents)

It’s an easy and fun way to help. Volunteers are needed in many towns to help like this!

More than 150 years after its construction (1851), the Town Tomb in #Amherst West #Cemetery had begun to show signs of its age: stone facia out of alignment, leaning, creating gaps; rusted ironwork (2008).

The squirrel is cute as hell, but only the deterioration of the #Tomb allowed him entry.

As part of a large package of proposals for the Town's 250th anniversary, the Historical Commission persuaded #TownMeeting to authorize $30,000 for restoration.

@adamgreenfield thanks for sharing. The local government w/ which I am most familiar might fall on the lower left quadrant, but the label is throwing me off.

Citizens have direct democratic power & authority on budgeting & all municipal laws. It is not by neighborhood, nor is it libertarian, as people expect others to follow laws the voters deliberate and decide.
How did you mean "libertarian"?
